I believe my Howa has a 1 in 9" twist. I believe the 1 in 8" is preferred in the 6.5x55. The strange part is that it shoots the heavier bullets better than the lighter ones. If I am correct about the twist rate, shouldn't it shoot the lighter bullets better, and struggle with the heavier...
:( Finally tried some of the new 6.5 Accubonds in my Howa 6.5x55 and was very disappointed in the performance. I don't know if it is the twist rate or that my rifle won't shoot any kind of boat tail bullet, but my groups were horrible. The frustrating thing is that it will shoot reasonably...
FWIW, in my Model 70 Super Shadow, I get the best groups with the standard Federal 210 primers, although the Winchester Magnum primers are right there with the same load. When I tried some of the Federal 215 Magnums, my group size increased noticeably. Of course, that is in my rifle, yours may...
HT, Notice Matt referenced 270WSM, so his load of IMR-7828 should be okay. Hodgdon's website shows a max of 64.5 gr with a 140 gr bullet. My favorite load in my .270WSM has been 65.0 gr of Vihtavuori N-165 with the Federal 210 primer and the 140 gr Accubond. It has produced some unbelievable...
RCBS customer service is legendary. They usually bail out lots of us from stupid mistakes or bad luck, usually at no charge. Believe me, they will take care of your problem, even if they have to send you back a new die.
I recently called them with a problem with the decapping pin in my .223...
I really like my new Reminton 700 SPS Varmint in .223 Remington. It is definitely a great bang for the buck varmint rifle. 26" bull barrel, synthetic stock, good R3 recoil pad, hinged floor plate, all matte black finish, and I got it for just $419.95 after mail in rebate on sale at the local...
Was curious if anyone has shot varmints with the 52 gr HPBT bullets in their .223? Do they provide explosive expansion? I realize the Ballistic Tips are the best choice, but I got a deal on 1000 of the BTHP bullets, and they are very accurate with 25.0 gr of Ramshot TAC powder and Winchester...
I think the Buckmasters compare very favorably with the Burris Fullfield II's. I have a pair of the 3-9X FFII's with the Ballistic Plex reticle, which I thought were the best value available when I purchased them. I then compared them to a 3-9X Nikon Buckmasters that one of son's friends had...
For the money, the Buckmasters is a very nice scope. Mine is a 4.5-14X SF. My newer Leupold VX-3 is clearer and has a wider field of view, but cost a lot more. For a $300 budget and if you need high magnification, the Buckmasters is tough to beat.
SHOTS stands for Standard Hunting Or Target Shooting. They are kind of an old school cup and core bullet to provide a cost effective alternative to Nosler's more expensive models. They are fairly soft, yet have provided good accuracy in my .223 Rem. Haven't yet tested their performance on...
I have had 2 different Competition Electronics Pro Digital chronographs and have been quite pleased with them. My only complaint is that the optional remote control is a little pricey. Check them out:

They do offer a lot...
Yotesmoker makes a good point. Your 1 in 14" twist rate may not be enough to stabilize the long 55 gr Ballistic Tips at the velocities your .223 is capable of. Won't hurt to try, but don't say you weren't warned! The only powder you list that wouldn't be appropriate for the .223 would be the...
My first centerfire rifle was a Winchester Model 70 Westerner. It was a cheaper model, that did have a walnut stock on it, but not as nice a finish and a blind magazine. It was chambered for the .243 Winchester. I had planned on purchasing a Ruger Model 77 in 6mm Remington, but the White...
You have two of the classic .270 Win powders on hand. Both should work well with 130 gr bullets, my friend used to load his .270 with 55 gr of IMR-4350 and 130 gr Nosler Solid Base spitzers, until he tried a mild load of 57.5 gr of H-4831 and had a nice improvement in accuracy. The H-4831 load...
Try the Nosler 100 gr Solid Base or Partition, or 95 gr Ballistic Tip or Partition, with a healthy dose of IMR-4350, IMR-4831, H-4831, Reloder 22 or Accurate 3100. I am loading the 95 gr Ballistic Tip with 43.2 gr of Accurate Data 86 powder (a bulk equivalent of 3100) and getting around 3050...
My particular .270WSM really likes the 140 gr Accubond with Vihtavuori N-165 and Federal 210 primers. Other powders that also seem to work okay were Reloder 22 and Reloder 19. Reloder 19 really performed well with the 130 gr bullets. I also have shot some pretty good groups with the 90 gr HP...
I really like my Competition Electronics Pro Chrono Digital, see one here:

I have had two different units of the more expensive model, and no, I didn't shoot one. I gave the first one to a buddy. I like it because it is...
If you would like to see some comparisons of .223 loads with progressively shorter barrels, check http://www.accuratereloading.com/223sb.html
It has some good information and even shows what kind of accuracy they got. Of course they used 3 powders that I never load my .223 with, but nothing...
