I thi)k you should go ahead and get it Ackleyed, work up loads from Quikloads to 64,500K. Use that light Hammer or the 120s for everything! Then you would have a quiet lightning bolt! :)
If I owned that 84M in 257 Roberts, I would end up getting it Ackleyed, ha. I traded a like new 6" Colt Python even for one of the first Special Run Mod 700 Classic in 257 Roberts, new, at a gunshop in Vidor Texas, 1982. I was a mud engineer on a well there. I had been reading some on the...
I'm also a member over on HammerTime, been discussing this over there too. Several spoke well of the 154gr HHT ( Hammer Hunter Tipped) that has a short nose. What I really like about Hammers is the fact one can just buy a sample pack)15) and try them out. I'm going to do that.
I had a nice 358 Win Browning BLR a few years ago. I had the same issue. I ended up having to use a 200 TSX instead of my favorite 200 TTSX. It shot the 200 Clkts fine, but they are a short bullet nose too. I have to get this rifle's trigger adjust right, seal the inletting yet. Scope it ( it...
I like the way 200 grainers thump out of an '06, just never loaded them in a WSM. I just loaded up some trial loads of 168 TTSX (pulled from last batch of handloads) over Big Game (per Barnes load data) and it seems this rifle has a tad short throat. From touching the lands to the bolt face...
Watching you close Scotty! I plan on using these Speer 225s to fireform my 338/06 Ackley. I just have never hunted/used 225 in any medium, ha. "But if I do", I think I trust the Hornady 225 to be a bit tougher than these Speer BTs.
Hey Vince, I used the older 185 XLC in a 338WM at roughly 250yds on my farthest cow elk. Pass through, 2" exit. I have some 175 Hammers or I would try the 185 TTSX for sure.
I have considered getting this one Cerakoted, but it really is a "spare". My dedicated elk rifle ( I like that phrase!) is a stainless synthetic with an easy to care for blued receiver. I have had scopes go wonky on me in the middle of hunts though and one time a sage seed locked up my Shilen...
I hear you Blkram, we are so messed up, God Himself had to send us a Savior, lol! Sonny as I get older, man, my "tastes" in lighter' lively rifles , has made my "tastebuds" more sensitive, ha
I never killed anything with the newer 200 TTSX, they shot as well as my older 200gr with the "secant Ogive". Those babies were real killers! I was amazed when they were as effective as the old 250X!
I was minding my own business ( not really, I was scoping out the local ads for a "good deal" on a "spare" rifle) My dedicated elk rifle is being reamed out to 338/06 AI/bedded right now. And my Shilen barreled 7x57 (dedicated deer/antelope/nice weather elk rifle is at the shop for the caliber...
I have owned more .270's than any caliber I can think of, 14 if I remember right, and yet, don't hunt with one. Don't own one now. My last one I gave to my Grand Daughter is a Kimber Classic 84L .270 with a 24" barrel. I found that I much preferred 24" barrels for them. Probably won't ever buy...
Thank you sir, I think I have a better grasp of it now. Seems I have to wait not only on my brass but a fired case from the new chambering. "But , Mother, I don't want to wait"...lol
I used new Lapua 30-06 necked up to 338/06 specs. A loaded round's neck is .362" OD, and a fired case neck OD is .372". That's what, .005" clearance per side? How much clearance do I need from the necked down Whelan brass and how will I know if a donut is forming? Haven't got my new Lot of 35...
The place I'm looking at for cow elk here in Utah said they get the majority of their shots from 200-300yds, perfect! I admire the 500-1000yd Long Range Hunters "who can really do it" , pile them up (not the fibbers/wannabes out there and the wounders/game losers). However, for me, I just have...
My first 338WM, back around '93 shot the Remington factory load when they put the 250GS in them. It shot bugholes! I got up from the range and went back to the store, bought 5 more boxes of the same Lot#. I never killed anything with them, but shot them like crazy out to 300! They are accurate...
