7mm-08 with short barrel - to AI or not?

Having a Tikka 7mm-08 cut and threaded at 17 inches. Want to play with a short barrel with a suppressor.

I understand some cartridges benefit from AI (280AI') and some it just doesn't matter.

Planning on losing about 25 FPS with the barrel cut. What about trying to offset this with an AI chamber?

Input appreciated.

I would expect to lose between 25-35 fps per inch.
The 7mm-08AI will help a lot with the MV loss with removing 7" inches of barrel (Assuming you have a 24" barrel).
I think it will be close enough, that the animal will never know the difference at your max distance.
What barrel length does it have right now and what MV with what bullet weight are you currently getting?

Tikka's are 22 from the factory. Didn't chrono before.

Agreed that no game, mostly deer and bear, will know the difference.

With a suppressor, the barrel length will be essentially back to factory length, but quite and less recoil.

This is truly one of those, the rifle is sitting in the back of the safe, needs a better purpose......how about !!!!

Thinking about bullet weight, I have a bunch of 120 and 140 BTs and ABs. Will play with each for best groups, maybe even try a 120 something mono.

Just need to find SRP brass for 7mm-08 or resize from 243 or 308?

I like my 280AIs

If you don't mind going down a reloading rabbit hole, the 119 gr Absolute Hammer bullet is a vital organ blender that leaves a very dead deer between two holes. It generates some very impressive speeds, it may just be the ticket to gain back some velocity with the short tube.

this is where I really like quickload . all the what if's a guy thinks about .

I used a 120 ballistic tip bullet . RL17 gave the highest velocity in both chamberings . here is the results .

Barrel is scheduled to FINALLY get back to me this week. Tikka 7mm-08 cut to 17 inches. Ordered a couple more suppressors, one is the Nosler 30K. Held it yesterday at the FFL, excited to see how it will preform on this barrel....hopefully my suppressor approval time won't be too long.

Thinking no AI for the barrel, start with 120 gr BT and see how they shoot and what velocity I get. Start with some Big Game powder as this is the highest velocity powder in Nosler data and I have 8 pounds sitting around.

here is a longer list of powders for this combo .

A 17" 7mm-08 will likely kill anything you have planned for it.
It is probably capable of distances on game that surpasses what most would be comfortable killing at.
Looking forward to your range reports!

My first 7mm-08 was a 14" center-grip XP-100
40.0 grains of H-4895 with a 140 NBT with a MV of 2540
42. grains of the same powder with a 120 NBT was running 2700 fps.
I killed a lot of critters with that XP-100: pd's, coyote, bobcat, turkey, whitetail, mule deer, and antelope.
Your post, made for a lot of good memories-Thanks!

Probably the type powder you use could make a difference. I don't have a 7-08 but I do have several rifles chambered to the parent cartridge, IE the .308 Win.

Rifle #1 is a Ruger M77 RSI with 18.5" barrel. Took me a couple of years to find a decently accurate load to use that rifle for hunt purposes. Velocity is 2550 FPS average with the 165 gr. Speer hot Core over W760.

Rifle #1 is a Winchester M70 Youth Ranger with 22" barrel I won in a raffle. It's restocked in a Ramline Velocity is 2650 FPS with the same load.

Note that the velocity from the M70 is the same as what the Speed Grand Slam factory loads delivered from that rifle. Powder looked suspiciously like W760/H414. Accuracy with the Speer GS load and my handload was very good.

Also note that Velocity difference was about 30 FPS per inch.

I thi)k you should go ahead and get it Ackleyed, work up loads from Quikloads to 64,500K. Use that light Hammer or the 120s for everything! Then you would have a quiet lightning bolt! :)
