Ya'll sit back this might be long. This is about a hunt that wasn't even mine but it a big impact on how I looked at hunting in general.
Back in November of 1968 my dad and I were new to deer hunting. My dad had been a bird hunter in the past and I had a couple of years of dove and quail...
Falteringummer is the only season we have in South Texas. Temps range from 110 deg to 0 deg on any given successive days. The only times I ever changed out truck tires was to put on solid tires that could survive mesquite thorns.
I didn't mention the binoculars I use. I have a 10x50 BassPro binocular that's actually a pretty fair glass. It's good for about 80% of the day. The first and last 20 minutes of legal hours they're useless. I upgraded to a Leupold 12x50 that are good for 1/2 hour before and after shooting...
I'd have to go back to before I had a drivers license to find that simpler time.
3-270 wins, 2-30-06, 2-243 wins, 2-20 gauge, 6-22 lr, and that's just long guns.
My first center fire rifle was a Winchester 94 Canadian Centennial 30-30. My dad gave it to me for my 12th birthday. I killed my first deer with it a few months later. It is my only lever rifle.
I've been having this discussion with myself for a year or so. I have a model 700 varmint in 22-250 that I don't particularly care for and have been thinking of what I could do with a short action.
Three from the ring was a three step stroke, 1. out of the ring (left side) with a cross body forearm stroke to the opposite side collarbone, 2. wrap around with a backhand stroke to the arm above the elbow, 3. finally another backhand stroke to that nerve spot right below the pocket on the...
When I'm shooting handguns (9mm & 45 acp) I use Walker electronic ear buds. They provide good protection. If someone breaks out a 357 or 44 it's time to put on the muffs. I use a pair of cheap sonic ear plugs and muffs when I'm shooting rifles or anything under a tin roof.
Deep fry in peanut oil at 350 degrees. Inject the bird with creole butter or what ever marinade you like and dust it well with spices like cajun shake. About three minutes per pound usually gets it done.
I don't think I could hit much past 350-400 yds so all my scopes are medium power like 2'7s, 3-9s, 2.5-8, 6xs, and a 3.5-10. All Leupolds of varying generation. I do have 4-12s, and a 6-18 on my varmint rifles.
I've not killed anything but whitetail deer with accubonds, and a few coyotes. I use the in 243 win 90gr, 257 Roberts 110gr, and 7m Rem Mag 160gr. I've killed one more deer with the 160 than shots fired. I shot a doe through the neck and the bullet then hit another doe in the head. I had...
