My rifle's at the smith getting its new barrel put on, but I'm almost changing my mind on the cartridge I want. The smith has it down as a 280AI again, but I think having a 24" 280 Rem would be neat. I could have it engraved "7mm Express" as well.
I know that the 280AI has "mo' powah baby," but...
It’s quickly becoming my favorite powder. It’s right in between 4350 and 483, meters well, and produces pretty good velocity with less powder used vs 4350
I can confirm this. While I have a 700 instead of a 70, my new Timney I got a few weeks ago was a legitimate 5 minute job. It’s nice not having to have slave pins and black magic to put one in
I'm rejoicing at another brand producing 280AI, but that Hammer load is going pretty slow for a 139, yeah?
Still, I'm looking forward to there being more brass for it available.
*edit: while still under usual 140 class max velocities, they actually got their comparison table flipped, which is...

I will only ever use backcountries now. They're solid and light and look good.
They make them for the 70 with medium height as the lowest, but medium on my 700 puts the 40mm bell close to the barrel.

So I guess the peanut gallery thinks that 24” is fine and I shouldn’t consider shorter?
There’s something sexy to me about a 280 Rem wearing a 24” barrel. I don’t know what about it gets my goat, but it surely does
My beloved 280AI is in the shop being rebuilt because of the inconsistent nature that the old barrel proved itself to have.
This time, it’s getting a medium sporter (think Bartlein’s 2b contour) with straight flutes, and a slimmer stock — a Remington 700 KS stock I got from ebay.
It’ll be a...
For sale or trade for a stock with a smaller barrel channel:
A McMillan Hunter's Edge Sendero inlet for a Remington 700LH long action with a Proof Sendero Light barrel. It has the Edge fill and pillars. This stock is bedded for my rifle and has some marks from doing that. Inlet for a BDL...
When do we get to hear about how well that model 70 you bought shoots? :p
It's always fun to be out with your friends and progeny. Glad y'all had a good time
