While I do not own a 35 Whelen, I have used one once on a cow elk. The 225 gr Corlokt worked fine.
I wouldn't hesitate to use either of the 200 gr AccuBond, 220 gr Hot Cor, or 225 gr Sierra BTSP for bear in a 35 Whelen; but would choose the one that shoots best in your rifle.
Your 358 Win load...
I have been looking at the Spartan Tripods too, but they start at over a grand. The Ascent (Woodland) is just under 4 lbs and is $1300. I have also been looking at the Hoplite for attaching to the rifle instead of the bipod, for a little more stability when mountain hunting. It weighs less than...
The set my wife has is heavy, and yes, I too am the one carrying it and setting it up for her.
I was going to buy the carbon version for weight savings, but she got hers for Christmas from my Mom. I will probably get the carbon one yet, but it'll be later this fall as my daughter's wedding is...
Vince,
Are you taking your own sticks, or using the PH's?
Susan used the PH's Death Grip Bog Pod, while he had me use his Viper sticks when in Africa.
In New Zealand, I took our Trigger Stick Tripod.
Susan liked the Death Grip, and got a set for Christmas last year. She found it more stable...
DrMike has a great load with the ABLR in his 280 Rem...unfortunately, my rifle didn't like it all! But as it shoots so well with the 140 gr AB, I haven't bothered any further. Although, I only have a couple boxes of that Federal ammo left and they don't make it anymore, and as I want to use the...
When you have rifle/ammo combo that performs consistently like that, you use it as is, and maintain complete trust and confidence in it!
I feel fortunate that I have a few rifles that perform like that! 😎
My LH Sako AV in 7MM STW is one, as is my LH Rem 700 300 WSM, and my LH Browning X Bolt in...
Really depends on the type of hunting and where you are hunting to determine boot type first...as late season can vary wildly as you move north!
And then, as already mentioned, spend as much as you can afford, as unhappy feet make an unhappy hunter. This is NOT the place to be cheap on your...
That'll do!
Many a custom rifle out there that only wish they could produce groups like that!
Your daughter is going to love that rifle!
Deer beware! There's a new assassin about to be released upon them!
While I may have paid a little too much, I do not feel guilty, nor have buyers remorse about, as I too have not bit the bullet, so to speak, when I should have in the past and have missed out on a fine rifle or two. As this was a Bucket List rifle, I didn't hesitate on it!
I look forward to...
I still want to shoot like you FOTIS when I grow up! 😎
But as I am a rifle "Toys R Us" kid, that may never happen! (Cause I shake like a leaf in a high wind, even on my best days!)
I have learned where to break the trigger, or release, in my wobble to get the smaller groups I do.
I am...
A rifle built for a shooter in his "right" mind! 😎
If she shoots as good as she looks you'll be smiling for years to come!
And those Kansas deer will learn to fear you and your "Tornado" loads! (As "Cyclone" and "Twister" are already taken by others!:D)
And here I go again!
If you recall my earlier post from January (#14), I still had the Winchester 1885 Low Wall in 6.5x55 on my Bucket List?
Well, 3 months ago, a fellow put one up for sale NIB, and I couldn't pass it up! Three months later, after making payments, it is on its way here...
I do not have the long range shooting experience of others here, as I am limited to 400 and 500 yards on our local gun ranges.
While I do practice with my rifles out to those distances (depending on the range I am visiting at the time), I do so with all of my centerfire rifles, regardless of...
Makes me wish I had gotten a Freedom Arms in 41 Rem Mag!
Was one of those "one day" items...
Maybe one day we'll have a government that will allow us to again purchase handguns...
Then I'll be after one!
While I cannot hunt with them, I do enjoy owning the two Ruger NMBHs I have in 41 Rem Mag...
I have long thought that a magnum 3 rifle battery on the same action and cartridge case for hunting any game world wide would be a 7mm Rem Mag, a 338 Win Mag and a 416 Taylor!
Nice work, and thanks for the info!
I have been saving empty milk jugs since last fall as I would like to finally do some testing myself.
For the 6.5 CM I want to test the 130 gr AccuBond and Terminal Ascent bullets at 300 yards, where they would still retain 1500-1800 ft. lbs of energy...
Best of luck on your quest!
As already mentioned, a bullet with excellent on-game performance in Africa is the Swift A-Frame.
With the scarcity of Partitions, this would be my choice.
They may be more expensive, but would still be the cheapest expense on your safari!
Paul,
Was your No.1 in 404 Jeffrey in the Tropical version?
A friend has all but that one. Then there were reports that Ruger didn't actually build the Tropical in the 404 although they advertised for it. And since then I have heard reports to the contrary...
While he has since suffered injuries...
