Smokeless Powder ammo in Black Powder antique revolver?

I got some 44 Russian "cowboy" ammo produced by HSM, and briefly considered using it in the break-top S&W. Even on their box, they caution against using it in revolvers intended for black powder. I shot some of it from my 629, and of course the recoil was very mild, almost none. I've had this...

    Sleepy Bear Cub

Great photo! I often like a mid-day nap myself... ;) That's the truth about wildlife photography! I ran into a photographer buddy of mine mid-day today when I got the dog out for his walk and swim. My buddy hadn't had a very productive day of photography, but was okay with that. He mentioned...

    Plinking Powder

500 at 2200 fps doesn't seem like a plinking load, unless you're plinking cape buffalo... ;)

    Memorial Day 2025

I get it my friend. This kind of post is great for others to read, when they hear from someone, an individual, who was affected by war loss. I suspect that most of the people in America don't even know anyone on active duty, let alone someone who perished on duty... :( Guy

    Plinking Powder

Well I'd think that between the 325 deer zapper and the 500 anything big zapper... You're pretty well set. :) Have fun. Am interested in how your loads work out! I like plinking with light loads in my bigger rifles. Guy

    Memorial Day 2025

I can get a little happy now and then on Memorial Day. Then the weight of all those who were killed in the line of duty overwhelms me. I'm good for a joke or two, a lighthearted memory or two, then I'm kinda done and just reflecting on those whom we sent to war, and didn't return. Some of my...

    Memorial Day 2025

Good morning all. I do wish that they had all made it home, but many thousands of them did not. May God bless their souls. Guy

    Nosler Partition for Buffalo

My 375 H&H in Africa back when John Barsness owned it. I'm sure he took that buffalo with a 300 grain Nosler Partition, however he took a second shot to drop the fleeing buffalo - with a different and larger bore rifle. I've got the details somewhere. He does give the 300 gr Partition credit for...

Coyote loads for MPBR vs dial/holdover.

I haven't slain any great number of coyotes over the years. Some. Farthest was about 420 yards with my deer load from the 25-06, a 115 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip at 3150 fps. Zeroed the 6x scope (simple duplex crosshairs) at 300 yards. I don't recall missing any coyotes with this setup, though I...

    Glasses for pistol shooting?

I had older officers do really well by using their reading glasses, so they could focus on their front sight. Like near-perfect score well. Of course they didn't go out on patrol with their reading glasses on, so that was a potential problem. Guy

    Lentil Soup And Grilled Cheese

Lentil soup? My only memory of lentil soup is coming back to camp after climbing El Piacho Del Diablo in Baja California... A 10,000' peak that takes a couple of days of hiking rough country, then a day to summit... We got back to camp and the woman who was tasked with dinner that night (we...

    Bullets for reduced recoil loads

I liked this from Sierra about the 150 GameKing: "Good penetration and expansion are characteristic of these bullets even at the reduced impact velocities at long range. With the weight range available, at least one of these bullets will prove ideal for almost any 30 caliber cartridge. The 150...

    Goodbye

Seems like he was a mighty fine man, and I'm sure you've followed in his footsteps. God bless - a good friend and mentor is tough to lose. Guy

    6.5CM deer bullet choice

Whenever folks say that the 6.5 Creedmoor isn't adequate for deer... I think about all the deer my son and I have taken with a 95 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip from the 6mm Remington or a 100-115 gr bullet from a 25-06 rifle... the Creedmoor uses a considerably bigger bullet than either of those...

35 Whelen or 9.3x62 and why?

They're pretty similar. Why choose one above the other for heavier game at modest range? I don't have one of either. Which do you prefer and why? Thanks! Guy

    Weatherby Camelia Wilderness 7-08 Rem

Cool. I've got that same scope on my 6.5 Creed Bergara. It's really nice! That should prove to be a wonderful rifle & scope combo. Regards, Guy

    .257 128gr ELDX

I suspect that like the 6mm and 6.5 Creedmoor cartridges, it's going to need a minimum of 1:8 twist. Hornady will likely list that on their product page sometime soon. The 128 gr ELD-X page isn't even up on their site yet. Guy
