What cartridge do you think deserves more love?

A few come to mind, starting with 257 Roberts, 7x57, 325 wsm, and the 8mm Rem Mag. Another two also come to mind that arent popular here in North america but are very popular in Europe. The 8x57 and 7x64.

Favorite bullet mfg not named Nosler and why

I noticed the other day a few Canadian online dealers posted some new stock for Nosler accubonds and ballistic tips. Not much but still nice to see it show up. The prices are pretty steep at : 70$ CAD for .270 130 NAB 50$ CAD for .308 150 Ballistic tips 84$ CAD for .308 150 NAB At those...

Favorite bullet mfg not named Nosler and why

As of lately speer has been my best option. In my area i've been finding good stock and the prices is alot lower than the rest of the competition. They shoot great in my rifles and have proven themselves reliable preformers with the velocities im pushing.

Alaskan Brown Bear Almost gets the Hunters

The 250gr Nosler PT out of my 338 win mag @ 2650fps penciled through a large black bear neck at only 200 yards. Had to finish him with follow ups. At 475 yards i would be hard pressed to use one. Another factor to keep into account is the reloads. How many times fired was the brass on? 3-4X on...

What have you taken bear with?

Using a Sauer 100Xt with a 22inch barrel. Yes, im running my load which is safe in my rifle at high pressure. Using H4895 and worked up. I would not recommend this load in older mauser rifles.

Heres another bullet recovered from one of my deer last year. 175 yard shot. Started at 2780 fps out of the 8x57 sauer 100 22 inch barrel, shot front on in the chest. Recovered 180gr, 100% weight retention. Good expansion.

The Runner(s) Up - All around cartridge

Favorite choice is the 8x57 Mauser with 180gr-200gr class bullets. Been used as an all-rounder for me. Never felt under gunned once with it, even in grizzly country. Runner up would be the 30-06 with same bullet weights as the above at similar velocities.

    Ruger No.1

I used to hunt with one, mine was a 1970's vintage 7x57. Sold it not to long ago. Perhaps i could find another in better condition.

165 Ballistic Tip vs. 165 Accubond

A few years back i shot a medium sized black bear at around 75 yards with my 308 win using 165gr Nosler ballistic tips at 2700 fps. The bullet killed the bear but while doing the autopsy there was no exit. The bullet disintegrated and all that was left was shrapnel from the copper jacket and...

    2022 Hunting Pictures

Another one bites the dust. 200 yard shot with the 8x57 180gr barnes TSX @2780 fps. Dropped on the spot. I believe this buck to be a hybrid Mule/Whitetail. Our local area is known to produce these hybrids with mule deer and whitetails living in the same area. Whitetail features include the tail...

    2022 Hunting Pictures

Tried to pull off a stalk on this buck, he busted me and took off. Stopped for a brief moment at 200 yards. All it took was a single 195gr hornady interlock out of the 8x57 flying at 2570 fps, punching through both shoulders to seal the deal. He only made an extra 50ish yards on two hind legs...

    Another Lesson or Two

I shot a whitetail buck several years back. Double lung. Followed the huge blood trail for about 100-150 yards. There was a creek i had to cross or so i thought. I got across and there was no more blood. I looked up and down the creek and nothing. Went back to where the buck was shot and...

What have you taken bear with?

Another bear taken last evening. 180gr Barnes TSX at 2780fps out of the 8x57 did the trick. Dropped on the spot.

    Experiences with 8MM's

Had a great evening sealing the deal on this black bear. 80 yard shot w/ the 8x57js. A single 180gr Barnes TSX bullet at 2780fps, dropped the bear on the spot. Nice entry and exit hole with very little meat damage.

    30-06 Brush Gun?

With today's modern powders and great bullet selection the 30-06's is definitely no slouch. I personally am a heavy for caliber type of guy so 200gr NAB, 200gr Speer hot-cors, 220gr NPT is something id use. Last time i was playing with 200gr Nosler accubonds and speers my chronograph was...

220GR Hornady ELD-x 300 WIN on bull Moose

Had the opportunity to partake in a moose hunt last week. Experiences with 8MM's

I was using H4895, if I recall it was 49 grains which was safe in my rifle. Velocity was approx. 2740 fps over the chronograph and that's with a 22 inch barrel. Based off quick load I could bump it up a couple grain before it reaches it's max pressure rating. 47 Grains of Imr 4064 is on the...
