Welcome aboard. Nice collection of game with your 8mm Gibbs. That bullet worked quite well for you.

Welcome aboard and that 8mm Gibbs is pretty cool. If you can, post up a picture of that devil!

Had a great evening sealing the deal on this black bear. 80 yard shot w/ the 8x57js. A single 180gr Barnes TSX bullet at 2780fps, dropped the bear on the spot. Nice entry and exit hole with very little meat damage.

I have an unmodified Kar 98K WW2 rifle in 8x57. I have drilled and tapped it and put on a 3 post reticle scope to simulate what the German Snipers used. Not authentic, definitely faux, but as close as I could get. Have killed several deer and 2 coyotes with it. It is a sub 2” group rifle that I enjoy fooling with. I load 200 gr Speer bullets at 2475 fps which is pretty much mil standard.

Heres another bullet recovered from one of my deer last year. 175 yard shot. Started at 2780 fps out of the 8x57 sauer 100 22 inch barrel, shot front on in the chest. Recovered 180gr, 100% weight retention. Good expansion.

I had an 8mm mag for a number of years, I liked it, killed some elk with it but turned it into a338 Jarrett, which I like better. But it was a fine cartridge and better now since the 325 added a better bullet selection

Awesome thread @8MMX57JS loving all those cool rifles and all the animals you have taken with them. Really like all of your guns but really like that synthetic stocked 8mm-06. 2790 fps with a 200 gr is a no joke! I'm kicking myself for not keeping the LH Browning 325 WSM I had, those are hard to find rifles. When I guided for mountain goats one of my hunters took a goat with a 8x68 and I believe a 221 gr bullet. Worked great of course. Prophet River has a couple Tikka 8x57's on their site that I wish were lefties. Would love to get one of those and do a barrel swap to get a gun I could use.

Interesting thread and, some great pics. Nothing wrong with the 8mm of any flavor it just never got any attention in the US probably because of where it came from and its association with the world wars. And never got much consideration for bullet development because of that. However, an 8-06 or 8X57 with a 200 grain AccuBond would cover about everything you’d need or want. If I was handed a well made sporterized Mauser in 8X57 and told that’s what I had to use for now on I certainly wouldn’t starve or miss out on hunting.

Here's a couple Ballistic Tips recovered from a good sized moose bull. Estimated around 1100-1200 live weight.
Shot out of 8x57 with 19" barrel. 180gr starting around 2630 fps.

One bullet found with core intact and the plastic tip. 139.5 gr = 77.5 percent weight retention.

The other found with core separation and some lead fragment. 145.5 gr = 80 percent weight retention.

I'd say they held up rather well for this type of bullet.

Congratulations on the bull moose. The BT is a proven design. Several years ago, Nosler beefed up the BT starting with the .308 180 gr and up. These bullets are excellent for elk and moose as you have proven.
