I haven't tried W780 yet, but it was brought to market as the same powder used in many of the Winchester Supreme factory ammo offerings, the 270 Win being one of those. It would be one to consider as a top option if starting from scratch.
I bet Ruger would even step up to a 21" barrel for that one.
The days of mass innovation by the manufactures is done for a while. The home-controlled feeder is the priority of the day, hehe.
In a previous thread, I mentioned some details about my M700 300SAUM, some basic things like adding a B&C stock, taking the pressure point out, adding it back in, and some load data. It shoots 180gr Hornady's with IMR4831 and the 168TTSX with Magpro really well.
I couldn't stand it. I had to...
You might want to try some Varget if you have it in inventory. If not, the Speer 70gr TNT HP, the sleek one, not the parachute profile one, is a great bullet to try since it is a flat base. Some rifles just shine with lighter flat-base bullets over a boat tail. I had a Savage that I tried...
Yes, they are very teritorial. There have been some magazine articles over the years about guys using dogs to hunt coyotes, not for chasing but as bait. I don't remember the details other than one must be on his toes in order to not lose a dog. I bet a howl caller would be a good option. I...
I think I'd have that bull European mounted to show that piece of antler. What a story, and what tough SOB! How does the book score those, "internal eyeguards?"
I don't think there are any real negatives about the 300WSM. Sure, you can pick apart just about any cartridge, but this one is a real contender for being one of the best all-around cartridges available. What's not to like about a 165gr at 3100fps out of a 24" barreled short action rifle...
Great read, Mike. How awesome was that to get vengance on that evil bastard! You're right, no bullet will do it all, but pushing a premium at a decent velocity will put the odds in your favor more times than not.
I also think a lot of it has to do with the brass and the primers to begin with. The last batch of Nosler brass I purchased seemed to have "lose" primer pockets from the get-go. The last batch of Winchester brass was just the opposite, very difficult to seat. Can brass and primer manufactures...
I've only loaded for one 257WBY, but it loved the 120gr NPT with IMR7828ssc and a WLRM primer. I don't have my data with me, but I recall OAL to be around 3.20". That is one of the coolest Weatherby cartridges, IMHO.
I don't hunt white tail, they don't live in my part of Oregon, but the claim of "all time" forces us to put choices on the list that might have a much lower significance today. One example: the Winchester 94. This would be my very last choice for a deer rifle. I just can't get a feel for a...
Not only did it sound strange to read about a bighorn hunt in Nebraska, it also sounded strange to read the magazine title "Hunt the West" when they are talking about Nebraska. It's a couple thousand miles East of what I consider to be the west.
I second that, even though I never got to the point of loading any Bergers. There's just no advantage that I see to using them. It makes it tough when there are credible accounts of both success and failure, not just, "it blew up on the shoulder, and the deer ran off," type a thing.
I had a...
My Grandpa's old '99 was my first rifle, and I still have it, but haven't used it in many years. The step-sons wasted no time taking a few deer and some cow elk with it though. I used 4064 for years, but have since changed to RL-15, still under a 180gr Speer Mag-Tip. It's really tough to get...
