    C Sharps?

It did, DrMike. I wish I had taken a picture of it from the end. It couldn't have been more than 1-1/4" thick. Not near enough to distribute the recoil. That's another one you wouldn't get me behind...widow maker.

    C Sharps?

I had a beautiful Shiloh Sharps 1874 in 45-90 once upon a time. It beat me too much and ended up selling it, reluctantly. The problem was the skinny, crescent steel butt plate. Had it been of the shotgun type I probably could have handled it. The Browning 1885 45-70 I have now is wonderful to...

    Right Combo

My first rifle was a CZ-24 30-06. I started reading Outdoor Life in 1968 and Jack O'Connor won me over to the 270 long ago. I had Hal Hartley, deceased for some years, of Lenoir, NC make me a custom 270 on an FN Supreme action, Douglas Premium barrel and his signature tiger tail maple stock with...

    Right Combo

That's a super group with the ol' 270. I haven't tried 4350 with the 130 gr bullet yet, mostly with the 150 PT and it does good. that 62 gr of H4831 must be a compressed load and I'd say just about all you can get in a Winchester case. I'll have to agree about those FW barrels. I tried for a...

At 100 yards it doesn't get much better. I'd say you've found the Mother Lode.

    The Great 3rd Gen Pistols

I must be getting old. I didn't know I had a similar thread already...my bad. I must have been wanting to talk about something today.

    The Great 3rd Gen Pistols

Of all the various pistols I've owned, sold and traded over the years, I haven't run across any that have been more reliable year after year regardless the ammo or the shape of the bullet than the 3rd Generation S&W pistols. I bought a 4506 back around 1990-91 and it has never failed to feed...

    Elk Rifle

I remember reading somewhere recently where Jack O'Connor had only lost one animal, an Elk, due to poor bullet construction and/or caliber. I can't recall what he was using but he indicated Elk must be armor plated an went out and bought a 35 Whelen. He took it to a Buffalo hunt in case anyone...

    Winchester 7x57 2nd Outing

Yep, I just saw your posts. I'd love to be able to go up there during Jack O'Connor Day. I've read much about the Snake River long ago and would like to see Idaho in general. It must be some beautiful country and game galore.

    Winchester 7x57 2nd Outing

That'll do it every time. :) I'd like to see more participation over at the JOC Hunting Heritage forum than what I have. If you've never been over there take a look see. http://www.jack-oconnor.org/JOCForum/index.php

    Winchester 7x57 2nd Outing

Sure looks like it could have. I'm wondering if anyone has that special case that has Lewiston spelled correctly. Mine is misspelled like yours and all others I've seen. My case is more of a Khaki color.

    Winchester 7x57 2nd Outing

I've read more times than one how Eleanor O'Connor was actually a better shot than Jack was. She was ol' death and destruction with her 7x57. I remember an article in the March 1968 edition of Outdoor life in Jack's monthly article on "Shooting" and the title was something like, "30 year Elk...

    Winchester 7x57 2nd Outing

The first time I was told that was at the range about six months ago. I'll sure never be half the hunter he was, unfortunately. I was a little unsure about how we'll any of us was going to do out there today. The fog didn't lift entirely until about an hour after I got there and that was about...

110 grain bullets out of a .270 win

I found them superbly accurate and devastating on crows. Hornady 110 gr and 60 gr of H4831 turns them to dust with a leg or two left over. I haven't tried Nosler's yet.

    Winchester 7x57 2nd Outing

Never had any intentions of selling that one. This one and the '52 Winchester 270 are two that I've never part with...well, I have to include my JOC Tribute Deluxe 270 also.

    45-70 at 200 yards

I found the 45-70 more pleasant to shoot than the 35 Whelen. Maybe the weight ahs something to do with it. I have a Browning BPCR in this caliber and it's as accurate as you are with Swiss 1.5 black powder and the old Lyman 457125 bullet. Yep, it's a thumper but due to the heavy barrel not too...

    Winchester 7x57 2nd Outing

i was tickled pink. This is the second time I've been able to get to the range since May due to the operation and was most pleased in the rifle/bullet combination. It seems to show a distinct preference for IMR 4350 over the RL-19 I tried so, I'm sticking with that. Last time I was out with...

    Winchester 7x57 2nd Outing

I just got back from the range and wanted to share some groups I got with this rifle several hours ago. I was quite pleased with them and wish I had bought at least a dozen of the older style Nosler 140 gr PT bullets. The actually gave me some of the best groups I got today. The top group is...
