Got a chance to play around with these some more. I backed the Retumbo off as 94 gr was still to hot. So I loaded up 93 and 93.5 of Retumbo and then 86 and 86.5 of RL-26. I ran out of case capacity with Retumbo to the point that if I want to seat the bullets any deeper I need to drop the charge...
Ok, this is far from pretty and very far from done, but I had a box of the 265 ABLR ridding around in my truck and I had to shoot some. I was a bit rushed to get it done on my work lunch, but I was able to gather some basic load data. All shots had Nosler brass with a WLRM primer. The goal was...
Guy, I have always loved that rifle of yours. It just looks like a lot of fun.
I have zero experience with any .308 bullet. But I have shot bucks at various ranges (80 yards-627yards) with both the 140 VLD and the 143 ELDX. All of the bucks that either of my 6.5 SAUMs have shot in the last...
I had great luck with the 40 gr. BT. If I remember right I was using IMR 4895, or CFE 223, but was getting sub inch groups @ 100 yards and 3650 out of a 20" barrel.
I have been playing with mine and some of the lighter bullets.
Had some decent luck with the 40 gr bt and H4895. Ended up getting 3/4 MOA and 3645 fps out of a 20" stainless Proof Research Barrel.
Had some Very good luck with the 55 gr bt and CFE223. 33 grs got me into a really nice .3-.4"...
I also decided to go the route of the Lansky 5 stone set up. I have done three knives with it this weekend. I will say that it will deffinately get a knive very sharp. It does deffinately take some time to get the initial edge how you want but I think that the next sharpening will go much...
I'm running the 143 ELDX out of my 6.5 SAUM at about 3030 from a 24" barrel. I'm am very happy with their performance on game and on paper. They will seperate jacket from core if impact velocity is high enough to mushrooom back past the machanical locking ring. I don't know if this is a big deal...
From what I have read online (we all know everything on the interweb is 107% accurate all 8 days of the week) is that it is designed to fit in an AR-15 platform and out perform the 5.56 by 300 fps (25% more case capacity).
If this is the case, I would most certianly say that Nosler is doing...
Guy-Great work! That is an awesome pic you getting ready to take your shot.
If I could have shot as well as your young partner when I was his age I would have had a nice 340 bull on my wall. It's awesome that some kids are developing that kind of skill early on.
Congrats to you both.
Not a problem at all.
Sounds like I have some more reading to do so I can learn what I need to be doing before I make much of an investment. I feel like right now, I know enough to screw it up. Thanks for the advice.
I carry a Havalon in my back as well. Apparently I'm a bit aggressive with it as I seem to break a blade every time I use it. I like the replaceable blade concept a lot. A buddy of mine runs an Outdoor Edge knife (swing blade I think) and I like that design a bit better than the Havalon. It...
That was going to be my next question. Diamond or not? I like the idea of using the diamond for the initial pass then switching up to the regular sharpeners and finishing with a super fine one.
I don't cut meat for a living, but I do end up putting a knife to 10 or more big game critters a year usually. Most of the time I make sure my equipment is sharp before I leave the house so not having power in the field is not a big deal to me. I do carry a stone with me in the field for touch...
I don't know that much about knives or the different reasons for different edges. What do you guys use to sharpen your knives. Convex bevel or straight angle? What's the pro/con of each? I'm having an debate between the Ken Onion Worksharp belt sander style or going with a Lansky system...
I ran them in mine for a while. Knocked down two big Idaho bucks with them. One at about 70 yards and one at 450 yards. Both dropped in their tracks. It has been my experience that they shoot just fine with jump. I was pushing them about 3050 fps out of my 24" barrel.
I went to the 168 in my...
I have the 168 ABLR shooting very well out of my 280 AI doing 2950 fps. That load has taken 1 cow elk and now one buck.
The cow elk was about 80 yards quartering towards us. The shooter put it right on the point of he shoulder. She ran about 50 yards. We lost sight of her, but heard her cough...
I got a chance to play with these in my 6.5 SAUM this fall. I was having a hard time with the 142 ABLR or the VLD getting them to shoot how I wanted. I picked up a box of these to see what they would do. They shoot very well and were very easy to get them shooting into .25" groups in my 24"...
The 24" gun is running 57 gr with a 210 doing 3040 and .5 MOA.
The 26" gun is running 58 gr with a WLRM doing 3070 and .3 MOA. This gun will run clear up to 3200, but it shoots so good where it is at that I don't want to mess with it.
