The factory 147's shoot great in my 6.5 PRC, but doing less than 2800 in a 24" barrel. I wish I had an AI case on the 30-06 family to compare to my 6.5-270 JDJ. I think I have a 280 AI somewhere but I'm in the middle of moving, so it'd be hard to find. Here's a pic of a FF'ed 6.5-270 JDJ with...
Awesome looking rifle and cool caliber. As you've proven, fire form loads can be quite accurate! I hunted with & killed several deer and hogs with my FF loads for the 6.5-270 JDJ.
The powders that you give you the best velocity in longer barrels will do the same in short barrels. I have several 15" Encore barrels in the same calibers that I have rifles and have proven this over and over.
You can't go wrong with either the 30-30 or 35 Rem in a Henry or Marlin. I have a Marlin 336 in 35 Rem and it's an awesome rifle. Furthest shot was 160ish yards on a doe. That shot was with the factory Hornady Leverevolution load. Which shoots great but I can't stand it's on game performance...
The 7 Back Country didn't interest me but the 6.5 Creedmoor case with the same alloy is interesting for sure. Handloader had an article on reloading the 7 BC. Federal currently recommends that you only reload their nickel plated peak alloy cases and not the uncoated ones like in their Fusion...
Wow, what a hunt! I think you may need to buy a lottery ticket with all that luck! Great rifle & cartridge too. Well done.
Hopefully you can get your 35 Rem figured out. I love mine.
What a beautiful rifle and a shooter at that! Like others have said, try either H4895 and/or going lighter in bullet weight if your starting 180gr handload is still too much recoil. I would be very cautious going lower on IMR4831 than what the book suggests. Hang fires and large velocity swings...
Yes, use the seating die. You don't want a hand fit, especially in a lever gun. You could accidentally seat the bullet deeper during cycling and have some pressure problems.
Are these black powder loads in a single shot or smokeless in something else?
Not sure I'd call it a replacement for R26. Ive had pretty good accuracy in my 6.5 & 7mm PRC's with Staball HD but velocity has been quite a bit lower than what the manuals say.
I've seen a black coyote while hunting but couldn't get a shot. I have trail cam pics of a tiny piebald doe but never saw her in person. I've seen an albino doe in the back of a neighborhood around where I live, shes kind of famous.
