From someone who lives out west I would opt for a 300 win mag, scope of your choice, Leupold not at the top of the list, just my .02. 30 cal offers lots of bullet weight choices to fill his needs if he reloads.
Scotty things are looking good with the 200 AB. I used retumbo right at 3200 and it shot very well, under moa a long ways out there. I have however switched to Magnum, not quite the same velocity, 3080 but it delivers even better accuracy. I could lean on it a little more to up the speed...
I found nosler brass to be the same when seating federal 215 primers. Had to extensively use the primer pocket tool to get the primers to seat using a press. Not all pieces required the primer pocket tool but enough did to just use the tool on all pieces.
Thanks Jim. I have no doubt your grandson is looking forward to being back over and helping with the reloading process and anything else grandma and grandpa might be doing.
Jim please tell Sue and her company thank you. Its tough enough knowing the virus is around and doing everthing possible to keep from getting it in everyday life but walking into work at a hospital everyday knowing it's there and not having the ppe needed is real scarry.
First off welcome aboard, great group of supportive and knowledegeable guys and gals here. If it were me I would shoot that load at 300 and 350 yards and see what it looks like. I'm merely guessing here but I'll bet you'll be pleased with the results. 3/4 moa will do well quite a ways out.
Gerry I was very impressed with that bullet. I wish I had recovered the bullet but at 40 or so yards it wasn't likely. I have never had a heart/lung shot bull go down so quick. He humped up at the shot and stood there for a second or so before turning 90 degrees and piling up at 10 yards give or...
Bonz it sounds like you have a couple of nice loads going with the Barnes bullets. Like Scotty said just a different means to get to the same ending. I've used Barnes and had great luck with accuracy and end results on game. I just had to try this bullet on elk this last season after seeing how...
Get enough brandy on board and you won't get out bid. Crown royal apple hasnt let me down yet. Be warned there is a fine line between not getting out bid on 1 rifle and not getting out bid on several rifles.
I fully understand Guy. My evening sipping whiskey has bought me more rifles and hunting gear that I care to let the wife know about. I've had a pretty good run since she knows very little about rifles but sadly I think she is catching on. I Only hope she doesn't sell them for what I told her I...
That would be opening one big can of whoop azz on any elk, bear, T rex, or anything else for that matter. I animal isn't much of a sample but I'm sold on them to be certain.
Not much of a report Scotty. 40 or so yard broad side shot, heart lungs. Stumbled / ran 10 or so yards and piled up. Oh yes it crushed him, I've never had a heart lung shot go down so quick with elk. No recovery of the bullet. I might even keep this rifle which goes against my norm of once I...
I was so impressed with the looks of that bullet, thanks for testing it by the way, I used it this year in my 35 whelen and can say with 100% confidence it's a stomper on elk. It's now my go to bullet for elk in the timber. It's also a very accurate bullet.
