-06 advise

Hi guys.....been doing lots of reading here and thought
I'd finally join. Looking for advise loading 150gr. ballistic tips for my Tikka -06. I tried H4350 (5 different charges) and Varget (4 different) but only the lightest load of Varget would shoot them accurately...... was very slow though (2750fps) so don't really want to use it. Everything else didn't seem to stabalize them. I also tried 2 different bullet seatings......has anybody been able to shoot these accurate and fast? (I really wanted to use them on whitetail.
No problem getting the 180 Partitions to work nice........my moose load will be 57.5gr. of H4350 (avg.2830 fps and shooting 5/8 moa) should be potent. My tikka will literally tack drive about 7 or 8 different loads of 180 part's.........that always makes it easier!

I have always used IMR 4350 for the '06 and 150 & 165gr bullets. One was a friend's Weatherby Vanguard and the other was an old 700 ADL that I had along time ago.Always seemed to shoot them into little holes :wink:

I have had better luck with the 165gr bullets in an '06. My standard load is 58.5-58.8 grs of IMR-4350 with just about any 165gr bullet seated off the lands 10-20 thousants.Rick.

Welcome to the Nosler forum.

Back in my 30-06 days, I always used IMR4350 for 150gr, 165gr and 180 gr bullets. Accuracy in a M700 and 742 Carbine was under 1 MOA.

thanks for the welcome JD.......I figured IMR4350 and H4350 would perform relatively similar. However, sounds like I better go buy some IMR and give it a go with the 150's before giving up and moving to 165's. I Appreciate the input!

What are you going to use the 150 gr BT for?
If WT deer, the 180 gr BT is an excellent bullet. If your rifle shoots 180 gr, you might be all set. Just a thought.......

JD......exactly yes, WT deer. I like 150's in an '06 for CXP2 class game.......seems like 180's just aren't required and the trajectory advantages of the 150 are very beneficial. Although your right, I'm sure 180 BT's would really open up quick and will probably shoot tighter groups........gets me back to thinkin maybe the 165 is the right comprimise. Where I hunt WT's there is plenty of long shooting........20 acre hey fields and stuff. Obviously the flatter shooting the bullet, the easier it is to hit them properly (atleast for me).

Not sure how long your shots are but consider the following:

Bullet Vel 100 200 300 400 500
150 gr BT 2900 +1.7 0.0 -7.3 -21.3 -42.9
165 gr BT 2800 +1.8 0.0 -7.8 -22.4 -44.9
180 gr BT 2700 +2.0 0.0 -8.3 -23.8 -47.0

I would look at the 165 gr BT or AB as a nice WT deer load but the 180 gr isn't that far off from the 150 gr. Also the heavier bullets will retain more energy at longer range.

actually it's funny JD, as soon as you mentioned the 180's got me to thinking.....I remembered comparing the ballistics before and something stuck in my mind that the 180's almost seemed to close the gap (on the lighter bullets) at the longer ranges. Must be because of the higher B.C. Anyway, I went to Winchesters website and compared their stats on the B-silvertip and at like 400 yards there is very little difference, except ofcourse the 180 hits much harder! Needless to say I ordered two boxes of 180 B.T's...... and the beauty is I'll be able to drive them at around 2830 fps+
Q- how do you think they would work on coyotes?? overpenetrate? it seems like an '06 and 180's are meant for each other!

You may also want to consider the 180 gr AB. This bullet will take care of WT deer up to Moose with a single load. It will also do a number on coyotes too. :wink:
