My good friend, that got hurt when he was hit by a truck on his quad last year, wanted some deer meat. So I took him up hunting today and I shot a buck so he could have some meat. The pictures will have to wait until after my kids Halloween party but I did find out that a Zeiss 4.5x14x44 doesn't have enough in the dials to reach that far. I had to use the reticle (R-1000). I hit him with the first shot though.

I bet its one of his 6.5 or 7mm-300 Win mags!!!

Congrats on the 1000 yard kill! Great shooting!

What bullet? Howd it perform?

It wasn't a very big buck but it was a 4 point. I rarely shoot a deer, by choice because I'm picky and will only shoot big deer (the last buck was in 2005 or 2006), but since it is close to the end of season I burned my tag to help get some meat for my buddy. I actually missed a 2 point buck at 500yds because it gave me little more than a Texas heart shot and I didn't notice the wind when I was laying prone. It gave me about a 6 inch window to punch it in the ribs and I didn't compensate for the 5+mph wind. Anyway I broke the 4 points back with the first shot. He dropped and kicked down behind some brush where I couldn't see him. I made my way around to about 250yds and his head was still up. All I could see out of the brush was his head so I tried to poke one through the brush and hit him in the throat. I saw the bulled deflect and go just past his head. I tried again and the bullet deflected again. After the commotion he kicked where I couldn't see him anymore again. When I got to about 75yds I finally got a clear shot at his neck and finished him. BTW I shot him with my 6.5-300wm and 140gr Amax bullet. The hole through his neck was pretty brutal. The first bullet was a bit far back and hit him right at the bottom of the spine (I held into the wind a bit much). It pretty well destroyed his spine but we only lost about 4" of back strap because the bullet hit pretty low.

His size made the shot all the more challenging. Great shooting.

That is some impressive shooting. Congratulations on the freezer buck.

The crappy part was I had to pack it out by myself too. I decided to leave my pack frame in the truck so I had to use my crappy Badlands pack. It was probably over a mile of steep frozen ground to side hill around to the deer. It took a while to get to him, bone him out, and pack him out.

A nice Buck and a great shot, its a lot larger than the one I shot in Idaho. (none) The Badlands beats carrying them over the shoulder. I have packed pieces with mine and save the rest for my frame.

Last year a friend and I packed a 6pt bull out with my Badlands and his Eberlestock Dragonfly. We had to relay the meat up a steep hill. I was ragged out after that. If my dirt bike was closer I would have run one load to the top and got my pack frame.

Nathan, check out the Eberlestock X2.. While a smaller pack, it does have a metal frame and it carries really well. I wouldn't think twice about strapping a 1/4 to it. Love that little pack.

Great shooting buddy! Way to go!
