10mm to 45 Super in Alaska

I went from a 44 Mag to the Glock 20 about 13 years ago for Bear Protection in Alaska and about 3 years ago purchased a G21 Gen 4 and set it up to handle 45 ACP +P to lower level 45 Super. Liked it so much it’s my primary sidearm in Bear Country with 22 spring.

The .45 Super is certainly capable. The 255 grain hard cast loads penetrate nearly as deep as the hot 10mm and leave a bigger hole while doing it.

I handload the 45 ACP + P at lower 45 Super levels. For the width of the largest interior grizzly I will have no problem with enough penetration with the correct bullets. I have had excellent results with RimRock TS 250gr RNFN . Yes I like the bigger hole especially on bears.

Added a recoil buffer and a heavier Wolf hammer, and went from the stock 16 lb to a 20 lb recoil spring. I’m getting 1239 fps with Underwood, 45 Super 230 grain Gold Dot loads. It’s actually nice to shoot. I’d rate recoil as a little less than a 41 Mag. It’s also easy to switch back to the 5” match barrel and stock recoil spring when not hunting with it, and using 45 ACP loads.

Don’t recommend 230 GD for hunting game
Only recommend Hornady 250gr XTP or Hornady 240 MAG XTP for deer size game and hog / black bear. These bullets are designed for 45 Colt / 454 velocity levels which are closer to your 45 Super levels in velocity and will give better penetration and better weight retention for game.

I don’t take extended distance shots at game. It’s bowhunting ranges for me. I put one of the GD 230’s through both lungs of a Whitetail at 20 yards with exit 4-5 years ago. I agree though. If I were going for anything bigger or defense I would go with 255 grain hard casts.

45 Super
250gr (.452) Hornady XTP @ 1210fps:
This load penetrated 22.5" in calibrated gel and made one of the longest permanent cavities I've seen from a handgun: 1"+ wide by 11" long! This is the 1st of two 14" long Blocks. Bullet settled down to caliber size hole for the remaining 8.5" in the next block. Expanded diameter averaged about .68. Retained weight of 240gr. This is not a max load and bullet seems like it can handle some more velocity. This is a very accurate load (three shots into ~.6” at 17 yards, or about 3.5 MOA!) and not too bad in recoil. For Deer and Black Bear I see no better bullet for the 45 Super than the 250gr XTP.

Similar results with 240 Mag XTP tad better weight retention.

I work my 10mm and 45 Super loads up to the 700 FPE or just under area and stop. Here in Alaska for Grizzly protection I don’t use Hollow Points. It’s deep penetration bullets like Hardcast like RimRock TS bullets heavy bullets. The Glock 20 in 10mm is very popular here in Alaska very few carry 45 Super. I seen a big transition from big bore heavy revolvers to the Glock 20 in Alaska several years ago especially since you could buy 2 Glock 20 for one 44 Mag Revolver.

I could think of a better deer / black bear / Hog load For 45 Super great bullet 1045 fps in 4.6” KKM G21.

This is my 45 Super Load for Alaska I substitute the 250gr XTP for the Rim Rock 250gr Hardcast Top Shelf RNFP for dangerous game.

Thank you. I don’t have any need for real dangerous game defense loads. Black bear is the biggest I’ll encounter. Your last Power Pistol load is the one that I’ll be testing next. That load with the XTP, really caught my attention. I did forget to say that I needed to buy a barrel bushing for the 6” barrel. The 5” comp barrel had a mated bushing and I didn’t want to change its dimensions for obvious reasons.

I couldn’t think of a better bullet than the 250/240gr XTP in the 45 for deer or Black Bear / Hog. Power Pistol and Longshot are 2 great powders that have worked great for me. If you need any help just send me a line.
FYI
I prefer LS over PP but both are good ! I get a tad more velocity out of the same charge weight with LS. Since LS is my preferred powder in 10mm it’s nice to just use just one powder.

I like AA 9 with CCI 350 for 12.0 for 45 ACP +P with the 250gr and 13.0 for 45 Super.
All loads are 4.6” kKM G21 22 pound spring
I need to work more with AA9 in 45 Super loads !

For a faster burn powder Longshot is my Favorite in 45 Super with a good window from 45 ACP +P to 45 Super +P at 8.0 to 9.0 with 250 XTP at 1.190”

In 5.2” KKM and 22 Pound spring

Note the 13.0 load in 4.6” KKM due to shorter barrel and velocity lost this load will a 45 Super load in 4.6” at 1075 fps.
Really like AA9 with CCI 350 in 5.2” with 250’s.
For your Area suggest the 250 XTP at 1.190”
