I've been developing a new load in my .338 Lapua using N570 with 300 grain Berger bullets. Accuracy has been outstanding and velocity is at 2730fps. Went out yesterday to see how they performed at distance and was not disappointed! I had some old paint buckets with lids that I filled with water and set 2 on the bottom and a third on top to form a triangle target. Ranged them at 1230 yards and got to work. Took me a few shots to walk it in as the wind was really tricky. It was 8-10mph from 1-2 o'clock from the shooting position and then you would watch the dust from the bullet splash move from left to right and then it would swirl back around from right to left after it cleared the tree line! Anyway, it was a challenge to dope it correctly, ended up being a 4 MOA left hold to get on target....the good news is that my ballistic calculator was only 1 MOA off from the actual dope for elevation which wasn't too bad for that range. Got my muzzle velocity corrected to match up with the program now. Once dialed in I managed to start calling shots on buckets and making hits! It was way too much fun...can't wait to try pushing the magic mile number. Just need to find a place with that kind of space! I got one of the hits on video. I'll post that as soon as I can. First shot on tape my spotter called high but after watching the tape I'm pretty sure I threaded it between the gap of the 2 buckets on the bottom. Second shot I hit the lower left bucket about 5 inches from the bottom.
Had to take a trophy shot after checking out the hits on the buckets...the bottom 2 were closer together during shooting, just stood them back up for the picture.
