I have a box of 125 BT and thinking of using them in the 300 RUM.I don't want to build something at the speed of light, just 3000 to 3200 fps but can't find any place to start. Any suggestions on a starting load ?

Now, I can't imagine why you'd want to shoot 125gn bullets out of a 300RUM, but according to Nosler #5, the slowest they show is around 3525fps using 94.5gn of AA3100, there's also 103gn of H1000 for 3555fps. I guess you could down load them even more, but that's as risky as exceeding the max. You could encounter inconsistent ignition causing a potential bullet being lodged in the barrel.

Good Luck with your experiment.

Do yourself a favor - avoid light loads with 125gr bullets in the cavernous 300RUM case. Its a recipe for disaster.

There is plenty of pressure-tested "low velocity" data for 125/130-grain bullets in the .300 RUM - just do not go below the listed loads.

- Hornady lists seven different powders for loading a 130-grain bullet to a minimum of 3200 fps.

- Accurate lists six different powders for loading a Nosler 125 BTip to 3031 to 3306 fps minimum velocities.

- Hodgdon lists two powders for loading a 130-grain bullet to the 3300 fps range, at ca. 51,000 psi.

As long as you use the exact components listed and do not reduce the charge below the listed minimum you should be okay. I would be worried if I was firing those minimum loads at cold temperatures: 32F or below.
