Does anyone have any experience with the 125Grn Ballistic Tip in a 30-06? Just wondering what kind of accuracy you are able to get with this "small for caliber" bullet?

Thanks

I dont know about 3006 but I used to load 47.0 W748 in my .308 and would get about 3110fps out of it. I shot a groundhog with it at about 50yd and it turned that whistlepig into a red mist

I would think that as far as accuracy is concerned, the .308 & 30-06 should be quite comparable. (I'm getting 3/4" groups with my hunting loads.) Where I hunt, the vast majority of shots will be under 200 Yds but there are a few places where you might get a 300yd shot. How was your 100Yd accuracy? i.e. what size groups? Have you tried it at longer 200+Yrd ranges?

Yup my buddy used the same bullet but in 3006 format. Ripped them dogs apart! Used IMR 4064 with the light slug.

I have used the 125 BT in my .308 as a deer load for several hunts. The muzzle velocity from my 22" barrel is just shy of 3100 fps and the accuracy is always 0.5" or better at 100 yds. I did find that my rifle was a bit picky about this bullet until I found the right combination of powder, primer, etc.

This is a flat shooting combination for the .308 or 30-06. However, if there is a chance the shots will be at close range, the BT will not hold together on a deer - it wasn't designed for this. If the shots are likely to come at 100 yds or greater, this is a great deer load and the most flat shooting bullet you can use for the .308 or 30-06.

As a teenager, I shot 125 gr Sierra's out of my .30-06 over a max load of IMR-4064 a lot. (My Dad would buy those Sierra bullets by the pound when they were here in So Cal, and we did not get the desired level of accuracy with the 110 gr bullets.) I was able to head-shoot a lot of jackrabbits out to 150 yards with that combo. I would imagine a Ballistic Tip would be even better.

I neglected to mention that I will be loading the 125 BTs primarilly for coyote hunting. I've got an exceptional deer hunting load worked up for the 165 Partitions using 57.4 Grn IMR4831. I get 3/4"-1" groups with this load at 100 Yds and took a nice 8PT opening day this year.

Wanted to use the 125Grn BT's as a varmint load so that I could "practice" on varmints with my deer gun during the off season. Ordered some factory seconds from Shooters Pro Shop the week before Christmas, but still haven't recieved them. Heard they were haveing some problems with their web site.

Sounds like you guys were getting good accuracy out of the 125Grns. Sounds plenty accurate and flatshooting enough for Coyotes.

I've also got a 22" barrel on my BAR. What powder / primer combo are you using? Can't wait to get them loaded up and see how they to the the old Odd6.

firstshot,

I am using 49.3 grains of W 748 powder and a Federal 210M primer in my .308. I have tried several powders, with RL12 giving me good accuracy also, but I could achieve the velocity I wanted with RL12. This load consistently cronographs at about 3090 from my rifle.

This would be an ideal bullet in your 3006 for coyotes. I consistenly get 1/2 inch or less groups with my load. Good luck.

POP, you wouldn't happen to remember your buddies setup would?

As far as hrdware he had a Winchester pushfeed model 70 ranger and a weaver 2-10 x38mm scope. As far as the recipegoes all I remember was cci 200 caps/win brass and a max load of IMR 4064. Sorry

I have had great accuracy with the 125 grain bullet. i'm a fan of the smaller 30 caliber bullets.
