Well, I filled my doe tag yesterday. I had already posted a pic of the fork horn I took last week out of my 7m-08 Browning at about 40 yds. Yesterdays deer was just a smidge smaller and actually was another buck but for horns had only 1" spikes. In Michigan this is a legal deer to tag with a doe tag (who could ever tell it was a buck).

Anyway, the shot was almost identical, quartering slightly towards at about 50 yds. Small hole going thru the skin, then front shoulder, ribs and exit just ahead of the liver. Buck ran about 40 yds and dropped. The hole going thru the shoulder was right at 2.5" and exit hole was about 1".

I was surprised by a minute blood trail (in the snow), but when they drop that fast you really don't need one.

Long

long,

Congratulations on your deer. Sounds like the 140 gr AB is really doing the job for you in your 7-08.
I hunted the first week in Moran (east end of the UP) and only saw 2 does.
High winds and snow storm kept the deer hunkered down. I am beginning to think that there are more wolves than deer!

The DNR is saying, over here, that the herd is down 45 percent since 1990. Just as they had planned. But the wolves don't hurt the deer herd, honest just ask the DNR. They are full of it up to their eye brows. I have seen more deer this year than in the last 3 put together. I hunt over by Crystal Falls - about 225 miles west of the bridge. Since the wolves came in a few years ago I went from seeing 15-20 deer a day to seeing an average of 3 deer in 5 days. This year I have seen deer 3 out of 5 days. Most in one day was 5...which was yesterday. The wolves must have moved out to easier hunting.

Want some great smoked trout . . . head west to Brevort. Great jerky too.

Long

long,

Not sure about the trout, but the whitefish is excellent.
I know the Brevort /Cut River area well. In fact, my brother-in-law fell off the catwalk under the Cut River bridge 50' and lived to talk about it.

As for the wolves, the DNR must think that they are vegitarians since they don't eat venison. I heard wolves howling almost every night and my brother-in law (I have a bunch since my wife is 1 of 15) had one within 30' one morning. Must have wanted some carrots for his venison roast because he went straight to the bait pile.

The wolves would be an excellent proving ground for the Accubonds, don't you think ?

Here in Texas we have a similar idiocy from the Parks and Wildlife Dept. Cormorants are quite prolific and ubiquitous. One Cormorant can clean a 1 acre lake of its fish population in a little over 2 weeks. All they do is eat and poop. In all its wisdom, Parks & Wildlife has put these useless animals on the Endangered List. To us hunter/fisherman they are like ants, they'll never go away.

There is a sporting goods store in Ispuming, Mi called the Wilderness. They were selling T shirts commenting on the wolves and smoking a pack a day.
My buddy wore his shirt to a "tree hugger for wolves" meeting last year. One of the DNR officials there told my buddy that he also had one of those shirts!
Interesting ah!
