160 gr Elk Medicine...ABs or PTs

I am going to work up some 160gr loads for my Rem CDL .280...for next years Wyoming Elk/Muley hunt.

I have seen several comments regarding the ABs vs the PTs for Elk /Mule Deer sized critters extoling good virtues of both... While I would welcome any good recipes(24" bbl)...I plan on trying JD 338s Re 22 and 7828 powders to start.

I have only worked up 120 and 140 gr AB loads in my .280s so far...

Any advice/opinions are welcome! 8)

Both are excellent bullets and will do the job. Shoot the more accurate one. RL 22 would work great.

Now, notice above that quickload uses a max of 58740 psi for the 280 and not the 60k+ psi of the 270 or 30-06. Probably because the 280 was originally introduced in the semi-auto remington and loaded low as such. In a good modern bolt gun "I" would feel comfortable going to 270 win psi max. Again I said "I"... not necessarily for everyone.

160 gr PT
IMR4831 54.0 grs
R-P case
Federal GM210M primer
Best 3 shot group at 100 yds .400"

Either the 160 gr AB or PT will get the job done on elk. Let your rifle decide which bullet to use and don't look back.

I would probably start at 56gr and work up from there...I realize the 60,000PSI thing. I have loaded 140s to over 58,000 in my Sako 75 w/o any pressure signs...

A friend suggested 55 gr of IMR 4831 for 2,900 fps load with 160 gr PTs
I see you used 54.0gr JD...I'd guess to start at 53gr with that one!

I see the MAX pressures on the new Hodgon reloading data site are WAY LOW! :roll:

With 54.0 grs IMR4831 and getting .4" groups, I never felt I needed any more for the 160 gr PT in my 280 Rem.

In your 30-06, take a look at the 180 gr AB, It will shoot nearly as flat as the 165 gr but will het a lot harder.

I am going to give the 160 Accubonds in my 7mm Rem Mag a try on an elk hunt in Montana this October. I have the utmost confidence in this bullet to take an elk. They are very accurate and shot placement is what it is all about. IMHO

I took my 7MM Mag Sako as my back up rifle on my last hunt. I shot 160 ABs and had them grouping very well also... I thought I needed a .300 Wby Mag...I never got a shot...

The 7mm 160 gr AB is an awesome bullet, accuracy is extreamly good in my 280AI. My best group pictured below measures .092".

This bullet will do well on deer and elk.

The 7mm 160 gr AB is a long bullet, 1.401". The BC is .531.
My COl is 3.489". The base of the bullet is even with the begining of the shoulder. I have almost all of the case capacity to use and the COL fits the magazine. I'm .166" off the lands.
