Getting reading to start loading the 168 LRAB in my 280AI...what powder would you guys recommend ? I have on hand 7828,N165,H4831,RL17 and Retumbo...

I would start with RL22. Its my go to powder in the 280AI.
I am going to start my load development soon, RL22 working up to around 58.0-59.0 grs.

JD338 has more experience with the 280 AI than many posting here; what he says carries a lot of weight. As far as burn rates are concerned, any of the powders you list would work to propel a projectile, however.

Jim does have the 280 Ackley really singing.. Out of the ones you have on hand, I would probably look at 7828 first, as it is very similar to RL22 in burn rate..

This is what the Ackley looks like with the 168 Custom Comp. I don't have any of the ABLR data, but backing down 10% from max you should be able to come up with something that looks good in your rifle..

Just remember, this data was for another bullet.. Hope it helps out a little.

I would think that you would be fine starting with 7828. I shoot it in mine and it shoots just as fine as RL-22. A buddy is shooting the 168 ABLR in his 280 AI and he is loading up 7828ssc and is getting dang near 3000 fps, and ragged hole groups.

If for some reason 7828 didn't pan out I might try the H4831, just because you have it. RL-22 works great, but why have another can of powder cluttering the shelf if a powder that you already use will do the trick.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the replies I am out of reloader 22 at the moment and so is all my sources...So it will more than likely be 7828...I think I have a full pound of it on the shelf..

I think you'll do well with the 7828.. That bullet is very impressive in my little 7mm WSM. Start em about .040 off the rifling and I bet it won't take much to get them shooting.

JMAD, Do you know what charge weights your buddy is using with the 168 and 7828ssc ?

He is shooting 58.5 gr. And getting 2990 with a 26" tube. I would start a little lower and work up to that.

Yes I will start lower...I'm running a 26'' tube also..Do you know if he is jumping these bullets alot or seating them close ?
