have a 700 bdl, 300 win mag and a 30/06 in 700 bdl. I have some 180 accubonds and btips. Was wondering what Nosler reccomends starting with off the lands for the best performance?
The way to establish your max overall length is by seating the bullet "out there" in a dummy round and using your bolt to ram the bullet into the lands. This will give you the max length that the bullet can be seated to kiss the lands. You can then choose to seat the bullets 10, 20 30, etc thousands off the lands.
Your rifle will decide where she likes it better for ultimate accuracy.
chet,
That is what i was wondering. I already have a stoney point and know the distance to the lands on all the bullets i have. Just wondering if Nosler has any recomendations as to where to start. I will load some .015 off and see how they do i guess. Just hate wasting ammo with no starting point.
POP,
Btw, I did read a thread where you said H4831 is your backup powder behind any 180 grain bullet. Have you tried this powder behind the 180 a/b and what speed did you get with the 67 grains of H4831
In their latest manual Nosler does describe a method similar to mine for establishing COAL. That said I do not think they recommend a specific distance off the lands for ultimate accuracy--as it should be. In my opinion saying that 30 or 40 off the lads is best is like saying everybody likes to eat carrots...not so.
For your 300 Win/180 AB I would recommend working up to 76 or so of H4831 and or RL22. I have never seen a "sound" 300 Win not shoot this load. Velocity in a 24" bbl should be in the 3050 fps area.
thanks POP,
Will let you know how it goes this wkend. I have the loads made up to 67 and stopped there. using 180 a/b and h4831 seated .015 off the lands. I hope this one works out. I have tried to get the barnes tsx's to shoot sub moa and it just wont do it no matter what powder ( imr 4350, rl-22, h4350, and h4831) . I can get 1.25- 1.00 but nothing better. Which i guess is ok for a hunting rifle. I have cleaned the barrel spotless with barnes cr-10 and Hoppes #9 and wipe-out, so if it aint clean by now, it never will be
everything is tight i just wish the trigger on the 300 was set to 3# like my 30/06. I think it may be the culprit here but we will see saturday.
Sounds good, but personally I would start at about 70 grains. At 67 grains-even if it is a one holer- your 30-06 will kick it's butt speed wise!
You could also try seating at SAAMI max and if it isn't touching your rifling it might be the place to start. Then if it doesn't shoot from there start getting closer by 3 shot strings. You don't have to load a lot of ammo to do that!
i have them at 3.915 and my stoney point tells me oal is 3.933 so i guess i am really .018 off the lands. guess i will work up a few more at 70 + and see how they do while i am at it. Looking like a long day at the range which is never a bad thing.
it's correct for sure. otherwise it wouldnt chamber. I have been shooting them like this for months now. they are checked, double checked and triple checked. remember this is to the ogive using stoney point bullet comparitor also remember that the comparitor is approx 1 inch, so if you take that away its really 2.xxx. Maybe that will clear it up
