180 or 200 in 300 RUM

I'm trying to decide which would be the best all around (one load for everything Washington State has to offer) bullet weight in the 300 RUM? I have some 180 grain Accubonds that are shooting really well but looking at the 200 grain Accubonds that are on the Shooters Pro Shop, I can get almost twice the amount of bullets for the same money. I'm looking for your guys thoughts on it. Thank you.

Corey

There's nothing that the 180 AccuBond won't handle, but at the velocities achieveable with the RUM, I say shoot the 200 grainers if your shoulders can take it. :)

Well said and spot on.

You have a good do all 180 load but the 200 should be a better do all. I have pushed the 200 ABs over 3200fps accurately but it was hard on the brass. The current load is going around 3170fps and still a big hammer.

300RUM sighted in at 300 yards.

180 AB at 3300fps 200 AB at 3170fps
600 yards -41.1" 600 yards -42.2"
800 yards -102.7" 800 yards -103.8"
1000 yards -202.8" 1000 yards -201.2"

Corey - I went to the 200's to hold muzzle velocity down a bit with the big .300 RUM. Even so, some of the FACTORY loads I tested punched a 200 gr Nosler Partition out at 3200 fps.

My own handloads weren't quite that stout - but didn't miss that level by much. Retumbo and the 200 AccuBond is a great, well-known combination for the .300 RUM. Hodgdon lists some very stout loads for that combo. Ballistic Coefficient of the 200 is great too. Have you tried the 200's yet for accuracy from your rifle?

As stated by Mountain Goat, either will work for everything - even if you draw that mythical bull moose tag!

I have not tried the 200s out of my RUM. Money is tight and I need another box to hunt and practise with. That is my delima. By the 200s off of Shooters Pro shop and start with Retumbo or stick with the 180s and get half the bullets but have a load I know is working in my rifle.
Brass life also scares me, can not find any 300 RUM brass around right now, I have some but must be carefull with it.

Looking at the numbers that Woodycreek posted not much difference at distance. That and the Nosler write up clearly shows they like the 200s. I hate delimas like this.

This close to hunting season, I'd stick with what I know works.

Even if you only have 10 or 20 cartridges left - that's more than enough for hunting season.

Theoretically, I'd say 200. Practically, whatever your gun likes best. I was thinking about loading 200s for my M70, but I can't find any Nosler RUM brass either. So I'm probably going to have to, ahem, bite the bullet and buy some factory loads with 180s.

Shooters Pro Shop had Noslers 300RUM brass two weeks ago. I found it buried on page 4 or 5? Also have a few bags of new Remington brass I may sell.

Ouch that will leave a mark. Woodycreek let me know if you decide to sell a bag.
