I just got back the other day from my 1st season Colorado elk hunt with a friend of mine Colorado Bob. We had a GREAT camp & went 2 for 2 on bulls. I took a nice 6x5 on opening morning. The morning was perfect, I could hear the cows calling each other as they came through the timber into the bowl. Just before first light I heard my bull bugle! It really got the adrenalin flowing. The cows showed up first, and then two bulls stepped into a shooting lane & started sparing. I took my bull with a 200 grain nosler Partition loaded in my 300 wby. A few days later Bob took his 5x5 with his tried & true 30-06 shooting 180 grain Hornadys. A great trip!

Congratulations on your bulls those will be some good eating for sure. Hopefully I can do the same in a couple of days.

Great job Iron Buck, have you had a chance to use the 7x57 on anything yet?

Not yet. Deer season is a few weeks away here in PA. That beautiful Ruger #1A will be following me around this season :). A GREAT hunting rifle.

I used my 300 wby out west on the elk hunt. It was a perfect match. I hit the bull twice. The first time he hobbled about 20 yards & stopped. The second shot dropped him for good. Range was about 250 yards or so. I recovered one of the bullets in the chest cavity after running the length of teh elk from the rear (second & final shot). I will post a picture of it wen I get a chance. The first shot went through the lungs & into the ground.

I've often thought the 200 grain bullet isn't used enough in the magnum rifles. I know the 180's have been putting meat on the table for years but it's hard to beat that long bullet and extra weight. I've been shooting a 200 AccuBond out of my .300 WSM. I know it won't hit the Weatherby speeds but it's extremely accurate. I'm leaving friday for an Antelope hunt in Montana with the other 7x57. Hopefully I can add a photo or two to the site. Once again, nice Elk!!!

Good luck to you also. I agree about the 200 grain 30 cals. They make GREAT elk loads. Especially out of teh big WBY case. My last shot was made as the bull faced away from me. He was hurt bad & would have died from teh lung shot.....but he was still standing so I launced another round at him that struck just above teh tail & raked forwrad & into the chest cavity. Making MUSH out of the lungs. He dropped straight down at that shot.

I used 78 grains of RL 22, which is listed as max in my manual. It shoots under an inch @100 yards in my rifle so I just keep it there! I was shooting a lot at the 300 meter range we have at my club, sighted 2" high at 100 I am getting 6 1/2" low at 300 meters. Perfect! And yes....it works on elk to

Hey Ironbuck,

How come you got to shoot yours out in the open and Pop had to shoot his in the hvy timber

Hey, congrats to you and your buddy on 2 nice animals.

Because the elk are "where you find them"..........as alll the locals love to say. And the elk where I hunt bed in heavy timber, but cross this to get there at first light. Trick is getting to this spot at 12,000' before sunrise! My elk came fom teh same side of the bowl I was on & tried to cross at the lower right corner of this picture, on teh flat, to get to the timber across from me. He just was not fast enough to get past a 200 grain NP @ 2900fps :) My buddy killed his elk from this exact spot just 2 days later. His tried to cros high & gave him a real close shot, but his died on the slope & tumbled down.
