Well deer season has started no luck so far seen a couple small young bucks a forky and a 3 or 4 point but too small to shoot in the group of 25 I've been watching. It's funny watching the 20 trucks and 30 quads running up and down the road and not see a single animal. Next years hit list will definitely be optics upgrades. A nice set of RF binos and possibly a quality spotting scope. As it has been quite difficult watching deer weave in and out of 4 ft sage at 800 yards to a mile when all you see is ears flicker. On the positive side Sunday I managed 4 coyotes in 45 minutes ranging from 170-550 yards and got a fifth yesterday morning. So I've definitely had some fun. Hopefully one of the bigger bucks I'd been watching will come in.

Good luck and keep watching.
Congrats on nailing Wiley and his brothers.

Yeah Vince it would have been one thing if I was trying and calling for them. This was just what came in on its own and I was there.

Thanks Mike. Haven't seen anything else I just might take one of those small ones would taste good.

Good luck Jake. Hope your able to put a good buck down.

Sounds like the coyotes are getting everything they deserve.

Well it was a long day and a few miles. But it was a blast even though I didn't get one. Started off the morning at the house watching the deer I see everyday. There was a third buck in there but not worth shooting. So I went and picked up my little brother and we went to the pass I cross when I go to work as I've seen deer there but never a buck so I took a guess that they were bedding over the top. So after a mile and a half hike in which we probably gained 1500-2000 ft of elevation. We started working down through the volcanic rock and circling the valley. We stopped and glassed a bunch. Matt was getting impatient so he jumped ahead and went across the ridge. I slowly followed while glassing. As I was glassing the draws I saw something move a deer head down grazing as it walked.

I quickly got moving and scampered up the hill to catch up. Then we came back down into a rock outcropping we had seen that would get us within shooting range in case we found something. Get to the outcropping and creap around until we got a good view. We start glassing and it was a while finally I see one laying down in the sage. She got up and meandered around a bit finally after an hour and a half I think they caught wind of us and 6 head went up and over the ridge. Then we finished hiking up the rim of the ridge we topped and boy there were some good views.

So we came off the hill and I came home to hunt the alfalfa field. Saw 27 head including 3 bucks. All are forkys one is pretty tall but none are braggers. I may or may not take one.

I had a blast today and realized a few things. One that hill kicked my butt. I know I'm not in the best shape but I know I'm not a pushover. Second I need to get a featherweight going cause that heavy 280 didn't help!

Those are amazing vistas, Jake. Your photography really lets us join you in the hunt. Thanks.

Great views.
I wish I was back in northern Nevada, Yerington area, as I like that country. Kind of dry but it has a beauty all it's own. Good luck finding a buck. I'll keep pulling for you to get it done.

You and me both. I used to l've in Winnemucca and hunted the Battle Mountain area quite a bit with a friend who live there. Many a time I gasped for air up on Mt. Lewis just below the radar site but took quite a few nice bucks of that mountain. I took the biggest bodied deer of my life in Thomas Canyon, jus a few mile west southwest of Winnemucca. He'd been living off an alfalfa field and was he good eating. Oh yeah. Had hunting privlidges on a couple of private ranches which was nice. Lost one when a bunch of California lawyers decided to become gentleman ranchers. Frankly, I hope they lost their ass on the venture. They banned any and all hunting on the place. :x I wouldn't haveminded so much but I used that place to take kids doing their first deer hunts as it was open enough they wouldn't have too much trouble finding their animal should it run off a bit after being shot. The other ranch had way too much cover in the portion that the rancher allowed hunting. I sure do miss Northern nevada, even the winters.

Well I had fun but came out empty handed. Could have had one if I really wanted to but that's the way it works. Could have taken one of three small forkys Friday night at about 200 yards but decided to wait and look for something bigger. Hoping they would come back in tonight which they didn't.

One need not pull the trigger to enjoy the hunt. Make no mistake, hunting itself, not necessarily the shooting, gets in the blood. It looks as if you have a pretty good go at the deer in your area, Jake.
