Did a bit of shooting this morning with my bronwing a-bolt in 22-250 w/22" bbl, 55g vmax, win case and win primer, .010" off lands. I picked 3 powders and loaded 1 shot each in .3g intervals. I used QL and found that with my particular rifle, it seemed to shoot pretty fast with IMR-4895 and W-760, but was spot on for H-380.

Anyways, I think I've got it narrowed down to 2 powders to work with. IMR-4895 and W-760 definately look better then H-380 and they shot faster anyways, so thats always a plus and what I look for, speed and velocity, theres no reason you cant have both.

This is the target with IMR-4895. It looks like shots 1-5 are pretty good, but to me I think shots 1-3 with 2 being the one I need to work around. Shot #2 is 34.9g and actual velocity was 3666fps, QL only predicted 3525fps. With the IMR-4895, I went up to 36.4g at 3796fps, QL was only predicting 3672fps. Seems I have a fast barrel or a fast lot of powder. If there was excessive pressure signs on the near max loads, I couldn't tell even at close to 3800fps.

This is the target with W-760. If it wasn't for shot #3, which I"m 99% sure I pulled that shot to the left, shots 1-5 would be great as well, leaving me to believe I need to work around shot #3 or 39.7g which gave me 3731fps, QL predicted 3536fps, so thats a full 200fps above what QL suggest. If not shot #3, what do you guys think? It would seem weird to me that shots 1-2 are good, 3 is ok, and 4-5 are good once again. I went up to 40.9g for an actual velocity of 3842fps, when QL only predicted 3656fps. I was getting pressure signs (slight ejector marks) on shots 6-7.

This target is with H-380. To my eyes, this group of shots is really spread about and woudln't seem to be a good choice. What do you guys think? I topped out at 38.4g which gave me 3592fps, QL predicted 3611fps. QL was within 10-20fps of all charge weights with H-380. I just dont really see a decent "group" of shots to work with.

Thanks for looking and lemme know what you guys think.

I'll be loading up some more shells and be getting out next weekend to fine tune with IMR-4895 and W-760. Am torn between doing 3 or 5 shot groups. This isn't a bench or pd rifle, its a coyote rifle, I dont get 5 shots at 1 dog. However, I know enough to know that a good load for a 3 shot group may not be the best load for a 5 shot group. I just dont care for doing 5 shot groups, but I know they can prove to be a more consistent load over time. I've never really had any trouble shooting big game at LR with 3 shot group loads though so just torn between the 2. I want this 22-250 to be consistent and know that it will put 3 into .5" or 5 into .75" "almost" everytime off a bench at 100 yards.

Awesome results and very informative. I have used the ladder method a couple of times and it does work rather well.

Going to be trying this method this weekend when when I'm working loads up for my 338 WM with RL-19, IMR 4350, and maybe some 7828SSC.

RemingtonMan I'll get a mower up to the range so we can shoot the 200, and the 600. I might even get a new 300 built. Would be interesting to try this method at some longer ranges I think.

I've done it at 200 and 300 yards before with mediocre results. You have to have a very accurate rifle and be able to call your shots. I think 200 would be a decent range. 100 is kinda close when there going on top of each other, makes the holes hard to mark. I've never really had stellar results using this method, but it does get you close with something to work around and I guess thats the whole idea.

A lot of times I'll do this ladder test at 100, then I'll load up a few loads of what I think should do ok, then I'll shoot them at 200, 300 or 400. That gets rid of the bad ones real quick and will show you a good one once you've got it.

Sounds good about gettin that mowed so we can shoot 200. A 300 yard target wouldn't be a bad idea either. If you need any help at all, gimme a holler.
