Went to the range today to check my zero with the 50 gr BT in my M700 VLS 22-250 Rem. Here is what I shot-
22-250Rem50grBT398.jpg

I also tried another load with the 55 gr BT, looks like a shotgun pattern. My rifle just doesn't like the 55 gr BT's with its 1:14 twist so I guess I am stuck with the 50 gr BT's.
I went out late this afternoon for a quick set on coyotes. On top of a bluff, I saw a coyote 300 yds out on the move. I called and in he came. He cleared the Russian Olives at 125 yds and I sent a 50 gr BT on the point of his shoulder. He spun around and ran a tight circle before heading into the thick stuff. I game him 30 minutes and went to find him. I confirmed a hit with hair and blood on the snow and followed him into the thicket.
After a quick look I decided to go back tomorrow morning with daylight since there wasn't much of a blood trail.
This is why I wanted to get a heavier bullet to shoot so I can get an exit wound 100% of the time.
I'll let you guys know the results tomorrow.

Thats a nice group JD338 I'm sorry to here your rifle doesn't like the 55 gr bts but with the 50s shooting like that who care's my savage likes the 55s and it has a 1:14 twist. Looks like I might have to buy some Varget to try with those 50s.

You better send that gun to me. I can't have any friend of mine shooting a gun that prints groups like that. Nice shooting my friend.

It's always been interesting to me how many .22-250's don't shoot well with the various plastic-tipped 55 grain bullets. They seem just a little too long to readily stabilize. Have run into that problem several times in the past. Dad's rifle scattered 55 grain Sierra Blitzkings around on the target like buckshot. Literally 3" so-called "groups." Some were entering the target partly sideways even at 100 yards! He was terribly disappointed in the rifle's performance.

I pumped up his load a bit for more velocity, then swapped to a 53 gr Sierra hp Matchking (a flat base) and suddenly the same rifle was shooting one-hole groups at 100 yards! Most amazing accuracy improvement I've ever seen w/handloads.

Also - I understand that you want a little better terminal performance - seems like you didn't hit him with enough bullet... Interesting problem you've got. Bigger bullets don't shoot well, and the light bullet didn't bring the yote down... You're not the only guy to run into that. Some of our yotes weigh in at 50 pounds or so and my .25-06 has become my favorite tool for that job. One friend of mine completely gave up on his .223 for yotes after having a couple of them run off after being hit. He's one heck of a shot, so I doubt shot placement can be the whole problem.

Regards, Guy

Well I have to admit that I lost that coyote.
I found where he laid down and then I lost his tail in the swamp where there is open water and blow downs.

Sorry guys.

Great shooting JD. I'm sure that 55 gr pill will get them(sure shoots well). An exit wound will aid in finding them, probably even knock them down right there where he stands.

Here is the target with both the 50 gr BT and the 55 gr BT. It is very clear that the rifle likes the 50 gr BT, just not the best bullet for quartering shots on coyotes since the bullet usually doesn't exit. This is the third rummer I have had and all were quartering on shots. Broadside shots put them down right now and the exit wound is about the size of a nickel.
Keep in mind that I made a couple of sight adjustments so the group is bigger.

I think I am going to give RL15 a try with the 55 gr BT.

JD, thats what works in my LVSF. Reloader 15 and 55 gn BT's. I don't get it since 50 grainers are nothing to brag about outa my rifle. :?

Thanks Long,

I just loaded up some with RL15.

I know how it feels to watch yotes run off with a blood spot on their pocket with BTs I dont get it either JD, thats why I use FMJ when shooting .224 . Alot of people swear by them and I've seen your success you posted awhile back but I dont have much luck with them when it comes to kadotes or bobcats.

JD,
One great group you have there !

I shot a lot of the 40gr B-tips and loved the speed, but I could certianly tell a difference switching to the 55gr-ers. I haven't seen too many more of the being hit and turning circles trick. It's usualy a pretty loud ker-WHOP and over.

Interesting results from the range. I tried RL15 with the 55 gr BT and hit the jackpot, 4 shot group went .471".

I also tried the 60 gr PT with both Varget and RL15. I hit the jackpot with RL15, shooting a 3 shot group that went .488". Varget looked like a shotgun pattern.

The recovered PT is from water jugs.

JD,

Have you tried the 60gr BT's outta that 250?

Rod

I am thinking hard about 2/250 I saw on the used rack...

Great chambering... that is for sure. The best general purpose varmint caliber ever.

+1 on POP's comment !

JD....Your thinking it arn't you....your looking for some 60gr B-tips

That is great ! And ya, now I'm thinking it..... just never thought it would have done that well with the slower twist.
