question to nosler or anyone who could help me out here... Im very new to reloading, in fact loaded my first shells 2 nights ago. I purchased a 100bag of winchester brass, 100 small primers, and nosler 40grain ballistic tip bullets to load some 22 hornet shells. I loaded the shells per my father in law whom reloads quite a bit. However, when i look at the bullet in the shell it seems as though there is a bit of space around the bullet between the bullet and the shell. I double checked the length for the full case, tip of bullet to rear of shell and its 1.723 as the nosler book recommended and chambered the shell, and it chambered just fine. Is this normal with such a small shell (the space between the shell and the bullet) or am i somehow doing something wrong? I also factory crimped the shell, which ive heard mixed emotions on, but im not completely sure how much of a crimp you want in it. If anyone can answer my questions id really appreciate it.

Thank you once again,

Jim

Welcome to the forum and to the world of reloading.

What you have done is loaded the bullet deep into the case past where the ogive (curved portion of the bullet) starts.
Depending on your rifle, you should be able to seat the bullet not quite so deep, which will increase your OAL (over all length). Usually, but not always, you can load longer than SAAMI spec calls for. You just want to make sure that the bullet does not engage with the rifiling when chambered and that the loaded cartridge will fit the clip or magazine.
Crimping is usually not necessary, and you don't want to crimp a case if the bullet does not have a cannelure (ring around the bullet) as this can distort the bullet and have an effect on accuracy.

If you can, post a pic of one of your reloads so we can confirm what you have there. If you have any more questions, ask away. There is a lot of
talent here, eager to help you out.

Savageman what kind of rifle are you loading for. I have a Ruger m77/22 Hornet and has a 6 shot clip my oal for the 40 gr bts is 1.810 and is just past the ogive of the bullet and shoots just fine but you could try the 35 gr V max from Hornady its a short bullet that you won't have a problem with. I hope this helps.

the old solid base 45 grn sp nosler and speers 33 grn tnt- I have tried other 40 and 45 grn bullets and nothing comes close to those to bullets.

I will try to post a pic as soon as possible. I can say i did not start pressing the bullet in little by little and checking it to see if it would chamber after each time, Although i thought that i should have done that after i loaded 20  . The gun i am loading them for is the Savage 40 Varminter series. I love this gun, and would recommend it to anyone that is looking to buy a hornet. The only downfall in my opinion is that there is no internal magazine or clip, But the gun is extremely accurate with factory remington core loct 45 grain shells. So im hoping with a bit of experimentation here, with handloading, that i will get the accuracy that i want. The other thing i am considering is trying the barnes 36grain varmint grenades. But id rather stick with the noslers. hahha..

Thanks for the help guys.

Jim
