22-250 Remington & 64 Gr Sierra Tipped Gamechanger, HELP?

Here's Nosler's data for their 64 grain bullet, which is a pretty stubby bullet despite the weight. If you use their data for your Sierra bullets, start low and work up. Not all 64 grain .224" bullets are the same. Just selecting the max charge is a bad idea, particularly since you don't have that exact bullet.

Whitetail medicine right there. Outstanding combo.

I "think" that bullet has been discontinued by Sierra. They're really good about answering inquiries about their bullets if you call 'em on the phone which I'd recommend at this late date instead of an e-mail since you intend to hunt with the bullets on Monday.

What I'm worried about is that your bullet may be too long to stabilize in the .22-250 unless it's got a faster than normal barrel twist.

That's pretty common with the 22-250 as many of them were built with 1:14 twist rates for short, light varmint bullets. Some 55 grain bullets don't even stabilize well from some 22-250's. Mine has a 1:14 twist rate and doesn't do well with tipped 55 grain bullets. If I use a shorter bullet, it shoots great. Your 64 grain Sierra is longer than many .224" bullets, so I'm concerned about stability issues. Meaning they could keyhole through the target, landing a bit sideways...

Regards, Guy
I don't know if that bullet has been discontinued or not? I had them on my watch list at Midway USA and they just emailed me last week saying they came back in stock. They won't shoot out of my 22-250 due to stabilizing issues. However 36 grains of Varget under a 50 Grain V-Max bullet will outshoot my capabilities. Especially when I topped the rifle with a $49.99 air rifle scope. I shot a .27" 3-shot group with that combo around 9 am this morning. The brass was PPC not PMC.

Guy do you know why that bullet was discontinued? Seems like a lot of trouble to make a bullet with all the set up and then drop it from your line up. Can’t imagine there was anything wrong with them.
Elaborate? It doesn't matter to me. I bought up enough .27,.284, & now .22 to last me the rest of my life

I don't know why, and I'm not sure it's gone - but several retailers list it as discontinued. Bullets come and bullets go. I suspect that it has a lot to do if a particular bullet is selling well and making a profit for the company.

If I had to guess, it was too long for 1-14” twist barrels to stabilize, and too short for the fast twist guys who worship the feet of the “B.C. is everything” idol.

While a .22-250 makes a decent deer rifle with a good bullet, shot placement etc. its bailiwick has always been 50-55 grain bullets moving fast for chucks and coyotes. Not a huge general demand as a deer rifle.

I've killed 1,006 whitetail deer in my career. #1,006 was with a 22-250. I've killed four with 2 different 410's this year. I've killed deer with a bow, 410, 20,, 12 gauges, a 22LR, 17 HMR, 222, 223, 243, 25-06, 270 Win, 7-08, 7 Mag, 30-30, 35 Rem, 308, 375 H&H Mag., & a 45-70. I definitely don't have to use my 22-250 as a deer rifle. I just figured it would be a cool gun to own & it is still deer season until Monday. My freezers are stocked full but I would like to taste test another one or two with my Lil 22-250. I have plenty of deer and plenty of neighbors who would love one. BTW, I'm pretty sure that I left several calibers off my list. Those were just the one's I could remember off the top of my head. I have led a blessed life with a LOT of hunting land. By my list of rifles that I've listed that I killed deer with you can tell that I'm old-school. No 6.5 CrippleMores, or no 350 Legends, lol.

I have a very classic taste in guns and cartridges too!

I talked to a friend who works at Sierra and confirmed the 64 gr TGK IS discontinued. However, they recently ran a batch so there are some floating around out there. If it's a favorite bullet, or you want to see if your rifle likes it, you might shop around and get some if you can find them.

FWIW, I have some Sierra factory 223 ammo loaded with this bullet. I shot it out of an M4 AR with a 3-9x scope at a 100 yds and it shot easily under an inch off bags.

Thanks for the info. Luckily, I bought of the 500 .22 cal 64 grain bullets. I already had enough in .27 & .28 cal to last me the rest of my life. Anyway, they keyhole through my 22.250. My 1st test batch through my AR using Varget were TERRIBLE!!! MOA was like this. Top right, middle left, lower right ⅓ on a sheet of note paper at 102 yards. The 50 Grain Hornaday V-Max on the other hand using the same Varget powder shot an impressive center to center .27" MOA at 102 yards. My range table is 10' to the right just out of my back door. I'm blessed to have plenty of land to roam, hunt, and shoot on whenever I like. Truly blessed. I have loaded and tested countless rounds over the last 5 years. I've worked up loafs fir all of my deer rifles, my brothers and my fathers deer rifles. That alone is a butt load of rifles. Then when you tac on buddies & cousins rifles you wind up with 8 or 9 oak & sweet gum trees the size of your waste or larger shot completely into. I can't lie. I tired of shooting and I despise the thoughts if having to work up another load. I'm beyond burned out in reloading. I loaded over 20 cases of 410, 20, and 12 gauge dove loads for this past dove season. I loaded hundreds of 45 Colt rounds, I loaded TSS Turkey Loads as well as TSS buckshot for deer and hogs. After all that I have literally just lost my interest in all of it. At least for a while anyway.
