22 inch or 24 inch barrel

Calibre?

Generally, you lose only about 25 to 40 fps for each inch, depending upon calibre. In the real world, the difference in velocity and MPBR is minimal.

I cut 2" off a lilja 30 cal barrel on my elk load 180gr Partiton I lost 12fps on another load I was working up lost 63fps with 168gr TSX in 30-06.

Be the last time I ever have a cut barrel shorter. It didn't hurt accuracy live and learn.

a 7mm rem mag and a 243 win is the calibers im wondering about thanks
............From my 16.5" tubed 300 WSM Ruger Frontier compact, I have done extensive chrony testing (using identical reloads), comparing velocities with two other friend`s 24" barreled 300 WSMs. This was done in order to determine just how much of a velocity loss (per inch) there really is as well as determining the overall percentage loss. Can`t comment on your 7mm mag or .243 though.

With my varied reloads and depending on the load, the across the board average loss ranged from 16 fps to 22 fps per every inch of shorter barrel length.

In an online article by Dick Metcalf which I can reference, he chrony`d 7mm/08 factory ammo from a 16.5" tubed Ruger Frontier and the same ammo from a 24" tubed 7mm/08. Taking his velocity figures and doing the math, taking the difference in velocity between the two, then dividing by 7.5" of shorter barrel length, there was a 16.4 fps (per inch) difference.

Only a chrony will know for sure. But there is absolutely no difference in any game stopping power between a 22" vs a 24" barrel with your two cartridges.

24" would be ideal for the 243 although you could get by with a 22" if you're after a little more manueverability. 26" is the shortest I would go with the 7 Rem mag to get the full potential and powder burn out of it.

The same 260 Rem ammo fired in my Kimber M84 22" bbl and in my 24" M700 gives the same numbers over my Pact chrono when extreem spead is figured in. A 20" M7 in 7-08 I used to have was within ~50 fps of my 24" M700, again useing the same loads.
I can`t hit anything far enought out to have the vel differance matter.........
