I am wondering what the .222 can safely do with a 40 grain and 50 grain bullet. What can it do at 46000 cup and what could it hypothetically do at the old standard of 50000 cup?

24 inch barrel...just wondering what the top powders would be and also what gl says is the best one for accuracy.

79impa,

QL does not address the issue of accuracy in a load. Also, to answer your request, it would be helpful is the make of the bullet and not simply the weight were provided. QL data is based on a number of criteria, including such things as bullet length, case capacity, powder burn rates, etc. It is a small matter, but the data generated does not use the outmoded CUP system of pressure measurement, but rather psi and bar. If I might make a suggestion, it would be to request data for a particular bullet and list some of the powders that you have available. From there, it is possible to suggest quite a few alternatives.

I was thinking that i'd try 40 ballistic tip, 50 grain v max, and 55 grain grain ballistic tips or 55 grain sierra game kings. I have rl7, imr 4198,ww748,h335,rl15,imr4320,blc2 on hand. I have been trying 50 grainers and got half inch groups for 4 shots from blc2. The bullets didn't like to shoot faster than 2900 fps even from my 24 inch pipe. I think that I was even in the 2750 fps range with my 20 inch barrelED 788. I have federal, pmc,ww,and remington cases. Federal small rifle primers, cci small regular and magnum,ww small rifle primers.

RL17 is too slow with the 40 grain BT. You can’t reach maximum charge. With a 55 grain BT, a maximum charge of 25.3 grains of RL17 is projected to generate 3114 fps in a 24 inch barrel. With the 50 grain Hornady V Max, a maximum charge of 25.6 grains of RL17 will generate 3177 fps. The pressure curve with this powder is pretty steep, which means that a small increase will make dramatic differences. You would want to approach maximum with a great deal of caution.

A2460 (23.6 grains maximum) or A2520 (24.5 grains maximum) give a more sustained pressure curve, and I would think they would yield better accuracy with the 55 grain BT.

21.5 grains of IMR 4198 (maximum charge) or 27.5 grains of BL-C2 would give you a good load with the 40 grain BT.

I use 21g IMR4198 or 21.5g H4198 with a 40g vmax and I get 3500 to 3600fps from my 24" bbl and under 1/2 MOA everytime I shoot it at 100 yards.

40g bullets is where its at in the triple deuce IMO, trajectory and splat factor turns it into a 300yd varminter.

I use win cases, cci 400 primers, OAL 2.150"

I have found my rifle will not shoot 50-52g bullets worth a chit at the higher end with 4198, granted its the only powder I've tried with 50, but 4198 shoots spectacular at the high end with 40 and 55s out of my rifle. I see no point in shooting a 50g bullet at 2900fps...

H335 with a rem 7 1/2 primer is suppose to be the cats a$$ with a 40g-52g pill both accuracy and velocity wise according to some older guys, rumor has it Walt Berger set and won many BR records with that combo. I need to try it...I cant see it shooting any better then what my 4198 does though so thats what keeps me from trying it. I've shot a lot of groups in the .1s and .2s with 4198 and 40g vmaxs.

Of the powders you list, I'd say 4198 has the most suitable burn rate . I always go with Hodgdon powders rather than IMRs, but I have had some pretty good accuracy with H4198 and 50-grain BTs. If you think you might want to expand your horizons a bit, think about giving Ramshot X-Terminator a try. It's got a lot going for it and has given me some outstanding results with the 50-grain V-Max and 50-grain BT.
