I just purchased a Rem 700 VTR in 223, and am working on some load development. One bullet I’d like to try out is the 55 grn BT. My local retailer is selling a 250 pack of 55 grn BT, and a 100 pack of 55 grn “Varmint Ballistic Tip.” They seem to have different part numbers, but I didn’t write them down.

Anyway, question is the old 55 grn BT’s discontinued in favor of the net Varmint line? Or are they the same with just different packaging.

I just don’t want to develop a load for a bullet that this store will run out of stock if it was discontinued.

THX!

P.S. also trying the 60 grn Hornady V-Max, and the 69 grn Sierra Match King (the VTR has a 1:9 twist barrel). Just wish the stupid rain would stop long enough to hit the range!!! :?

The 55 gr BT is the same bullet but offered in different count boxes, hence the different part numbers.

All .224 ballistic tips are "varmint" type.
All .204 ballistic tips are "varmint" type.
All .243 ballistic tips 80grs or less are "varmint" type.
the 85 grain .257 ballistic tip is a "varmint" type.

All other ballistic tips are "hunting" type.
designed for a more controlled expansion, yet they are still a little sensitive to higher impact velocities.

The 60 grain Partition is a nasty little pill for hogs and dogs, you'd do well to give it a try as well.

Congrats on the new VTR -

If you want to stay with Nosler, don't discount the 60gr B-tip. I can't say I'm a fan of the canelure (SP?) however
they are the ones that have shot the best out of mine.
I've been trying to find a load with the 70gr VLD's , but coming up short.

Let us know how it shoots.
