Not what you listed but if I was using a .223 for deer a Hornady 55gr GMX, a 55gr or 62gr Barnes TTSX would be the 3 bullets on my short list.

Search for topics on the 64 grain nosler bonded solid base here on the reloading forum and also in the .224 section of the bullet test forum.
It will stabilize in 1-12 and 1-9 twist which the 70 grain Barnes will not.

My largest SE whitetail dressed at 195 pounds. I would not use a .223 or 5.56mm for deer. My $0.02 cents worth

What does a whitetail weigh (Average)? Do you have any state legislation requirement for bullet MV & energy to take differing species of deer?
.223 seems very lightweight cartridge to use on this kind of game..however, in the UK we do have the above requirements for shooting deer, so we're tuned in to that. A .22 centrefire would only be allowed in Scotland for small roe deer (Avg 30-40 lbs weight) & not at all in England. The smallest in England would be .243.

Agree with you Charlie. That sounds like hunting Elk with a .243. Believe it or not I've seen some big deer come out of florida.

I've killed quite a few deer with the .223, but must admit they were all in some sort of distress. Injured by dogs, collisions with cars or trains. Caught in a deer fence. Sick. Whatever.
Only once did it take two shots from the little AR-15, using 55 gr soft point ammo. Most of the kills were instant. Some of the deer were quite mobile. Much quicker kills than I usually got using the .45 ACP pistol.
Both worked though. I understand that hunting with the .223 has become quite popular, mostly because of the popularity of the AR-15 I'd guess. Still not legal to use the .223/5.56 on deer here in Washington, but given a decent marksman, I'd think it would work just fine. Put that expanding bullet in the lungs & heart, and you've got a dead deer.

I haven't tried the 64 grn Bonded Solid Base, but I thought I've heard something about it being developed for the AR platform. My 223 is a Rem 700 VTR, with a 1:9 twist.
I have tried 62 grn Barns TTSX, my first test loads didn't turn out. I was 0.1" off the lands, I have another test string at 0.15" deep (with Varget). Still working on it...
I made several runs at the 60 grn Partitions, but I couldn't get them go group much better the 1.5 to 2".
My main load for target shooting and coyotes is 60 grn Hornady V-Max using Varget. I get 0.6" groups with that, but that's also not a suitable bullet for deer size animals.
So, I've played with bullets that could do the job on deer, but with not luck so far. But to be honest, I have so many other rifle options for deer that I have no reason to work at it too hard. :mrgreen:

I tried really really hard to get 60gr. Partitions to shoot but was never able to get a load I was happy with so I went back to my old standby. That old standby was the 64gr. Winchester Power Point loaded with W-748. That has accounted for a few one shot kills on Whitetails and Pronghorns. None were drop in their tracks DRT but one shot kills non the less.
More recently I switched to the 65gr. Sierra Gameking Spitzer Boat Tails loaded with Varget. They actually shoot a bit tighter groups. Only two Whitetails have fallen to this load (one by my granddaughter and one by a buddies daughter). I was not present when my buddies daughter shot her Whitetail but if I remember right she hit it a bit far back and it required a second shot. My granddaughter's Whitetail was not a very good test as the little buck was over 15 yards. I instructed her to aim at the white patch on his throat and he was dead before he hit the ground.
I have also used the Speer 70gr. Semi Pointed with good results as I have Winchester 55gr. Pointed Soft Point factory ammo.
The key is reasonable range and put the bullet in the right place.

The 64 gr BSB was indeed designed for the AR platform but it also worked very well
in a 700 1:14 twist 22-250 at 3372 fps. Shooting into water jugs the penetration was excellent,
recovering the bullet in the 5th jug.

In this thread a guy tested quite a few .30 cal bullets, the little 55gr GMX dug deeper and expanded near the same as a 200gr AccuBond and it out did several good .30 cal bullets. Most guys I know would not worry about the penetration or ability to break bones with a 200gr AccuBond.
