Has anyone had any luck with the 223 WSSM?

I had one Browning 21" barrel (huge mistake by Browning imo) but never really liked it. Shot ok never got to advertised ballistics due to stubby barrel though.

POP,

All my info has just been here say, but appears to suffer from the old .17Rem... fairly accurate and fast, just always appears to have one flyer in the group...??
Probably an ok yote round, but it drives me crazy when I can't find a load for a paticular round.

Never fired a 223 WSSM...but I can say, with some certainty, that 21 inches is not enough barrel for that round...it will need at least 24" (maybe even 26)

Pop, I had a Winchester chambered in 223 WSSM and was quite dissapointed. It was the all black Super Shadow Super Short model. I wanted it for predator hunting. It had a 22 inch barrel.

The gun was VERY fast, AMAZINGLY fast. I could get 3950 fps with factory 55 grain ammo. With reloads I could reach 4600 fps with 40 grain bullets.

However, it was AMAZINGLY INNACURATE !!

I might shoot a fair group with a particular load then barely hit the paper a few minutes later after letting the barrel cool.

On the day I decided to get rid of it I shot a pretty good pair of groups with the factory 55 grain loads, maybe 1.5 inches. I cleaned the gun and was going to sight it in to hunt with that load. I never hit the target frame again!

I had tried untold loads in it. I tried two different scopes, two different sets of rings and bases, etc. etc.

I believe it was the lousy chrome lined barrel. The guy I sold it to sent it back to Winchester and they sent him a new rifle. He kept it about 2 weeks and sent it back. The sent him a third rifle. It would not shoot, either. He finally rebarreled that action with a custom barrel and made it into a 243 WSSM. It now shoots great.

I was thinking of getting a Winchester Coyote with a 24" barrel. I can not find anything in 26" barrel. I do not know whether this rifle has a chrome lined barrel. I think you are right. This is where the accuracy problems stem from.

I got mine back from Winchester. It was a new rifle. It shoots a 1" hole (if I do my part) at 100 yds. with handloads. 52 gr. Sierra BTHP match bullets. at about 3800 fps. If I go above that the group opens up real fast. I like the light weight and size. It's like shooting a 22LR. It's the perfect thow it in the truck varmint rifle. I have the 4.5x14x40 Leupold scope on it which is also small and light with the Butler creek target turret cap. The rifle I sent to Winchester was worthless. It would throw bullets all over the target at 50 yards. I tried all the reloading tricks I knew and several types and weights of bullets and different powders with no luck.
I guess the bottom line is " if you like it buy it but be prepared to send it back to the manufactor if it won't shoot" Hopefully you'll get a good one back. Also the trigger wouldn't adjust worth a darn so a Riflebasix trigger is in order. Other than that I love it  If you get one I'll give you my loading specs.

I know...I was being a wise buttocks!

I had a 25 WSSM in a 70 Super Shadow, shot well, but I never spent alot of time with it. Shot 2 boxes of Super X factory ammo thro it, never loaded for it or cleaned it. One of my friends wanted it and I didn't like how it jammed. Very nice packing gun I bet.

CC.

Pop, I bought the winchester coyote in 223 wsm and drived me crazy!
It was shooting nicely (not enough anyway for me) at 100metres but at 200 the group looked like a shot with a 12 gauge, one hole here, another there and another??? So I sold it after two months at half price.
Please don't be another "victim" of that rifle :) :)
