Been trying again to find a load in my M700 VLS 22-250 with a 1:14 twist that will shoot the Nosler 224 cal 60 gr PT. Purpose of the load is for hunting coyotes.
The original ogive design shot under .5" with RL 15 but newer profile worn shoot better than 4-5" patterns. I have tried Varget, IMR 4895, IMR 4064, IMR 4350, and H 380.

Well, I may have found a winner, MAX load of H 380!
I loaded 5 at 38.5 grs and shot a cloverleaf at 50 yds with 2 left for a rough sight in at 100 yds.
I have loaded up additional shells for testing and will post my results.
This little 60 gr PT is an awesome coyote bullet from any angle.

Congratulations. We'll look forward to seeing the results of your work. I would imagine that the 60 grain PT would be wicked on coyotes out of the 22-250.

Thats great Jim. I have a few rounds loaded with AA2520, RL15, and Varget so we shall see what shoots. I have alot of the 60gr Partitions and think they will be deadly out of the 22-250 on coyotes and such. If none of those work, I would like to try H380. Scotty

Scotty,

H 380 was my last hope for the 60 gr PT in a 1:14 twist.
FWIW, This powder is also listed in the Nosler RG #6 as Most Accurate Powder Tested. Should have been my first clue! Nosler recommendations are usually spot on.

yup, thats how they named it , in the biginning that powder loaded in Bruce Hodgdon's personal 22-250 with 38.0 gr would make 1 hole groups with numerous 55 gr bullets. its been my powder of choice in the 22-250 for years.

I would have gone with H 380 when I first got the 22-250 but I had Varget on hand and it shot in the .5's from the get go so I never bothered to try other powders.

Woulda, coulda, shoulda....

I will also work up a load for the 55 gr BT. I am guessing 38.o should be close.

I've read alot of good stuff about varget, but never had it do overly well in anything from the 223 to 7mm/08, guess my stuff just don't like it.

I had a can of H380 in my hand today and I put it back. I figured I already had those loaded for my 22-250 and if they didn't work I could try H380. I am going to shoot tomorrow, so I will see how they work. Seems like H380 was made for the 22-250 though. I wished I would have gotten it sooner. Scotty

Jim, I shot 2 of the three powders I had loaded. I shot the 33 and 34gr of RL15. I got about 1.25 out of 33gr (3280) and under an inch for 34gr (3380). Next I tried Varget at 33gr (3310) and about one inch and 34gr was (3370) and about 5/8". I didn't have time to try AA2520 since I had other stuff to do. I am kind of anxious to finish them up though. I think I am getting great speed and excellent accuracy out of the upper end of the charge weights with both Varget and RL15. I suspect AA2520 will be as good or better. My 22-250 is a Savage with a 26" barrel. Overall, it looks like the rifle stabilizes the 60gr'er's pretty well. I am pretty excited over this, cause that will be my new coyote load. After the performance you received out of them, they look like big winners. I left my target in my buddies shooting bag, but if I can get it back I will post it up. Scotty

I am glad they worked, cause I have a whole lot of them on the bench! Scotty
