I know what you're thinking

I was out coyote hunting as I had given up hope of finding a big buck and season closes in a few days. Out comes this nice mulie and all I had was my 243 with 55 NBT @ 3815 fps. He turned broadside at 75 yards, and I let him have it

And the rest of the story is ------- we all want to know what happened.
I'm assuming you got your buck, how far did he go.

Based on what I've seen from BT's at high velocity, I'd suspect his front half went forward, while his back half went backward, and then both fell hard. How close is my guess?

Let me guess!!!! He folded on the spot and there was very little, if any, meat damage. Had some buddies at Gander Mtn. that devoloped V-Max loads for the .243 that were scorching hot. It was their preferred broadside deer load...

oh yes the rest of the story 8)

he jumped a bit and slowly trotted 80 yards before his legs got weak and he fell on his face, two kicks and he was done

bullet actually went right through him  nearside lung was absolute pulp, the farside lung only had a golfball sized hole in it, and the exit in the ribs was slightly smaller than a golfball

I am speechless.

A stunt that had a happy ending...

Nice buck, congratulations on a successful kill.

May I suggest thought that if you are duel role hunting, use a deer bullet on the coyotes. I would hate to see you lose a buck shot with a varmint bullet.

When I shoot the 55gr BT's out of my .243, a basketball sized fireball comes out the end of my barrel. I'm suprised you didn't catch him on fire.

For sure! I only tried one powder and loaded 5 up just to try them out. Any suggestions on powder? If I remember correctly, I started with 40.5gr of IMR4895. After the fireball incident, I haven't even messed with them. I shot 3 of the 5 and it happened on all three. They did group about an inch at 100 yards though.

this isnt something I would go out and try to do, but from now on I think I will have a few 100 grain bullets in my pocket when I go coyote hunting during a deer season 8)

I'd try some N-140 or RL-15 out of that .243.
My 22-250 used to do that with the IMR-4350. We do a lot of yote hunting at night and that fireball really sucked for attempting to see if you were on target or not.

That there is a pretty buck. Id have been tempted to take a shot at him with a pea shooter if thats all I had!! CL
