25-06 Artical from American rifleman.

That looks like it was from a good long time ago. Cool.

November 1972. Wow... 40 years ago. I see the old style Nosler bullet. Some of the others haven't changed in that time. Others aren't even made anymore. Not much of a powder selection in those days either - and I remember that. Dad and I used a lot of good old IMR 4350 in those days.

Thanks for posting!

The more I play with my 25/06 the more I like it.

I've been focused on the .300 Win Mag this year but need to get the 25 out and sight it in for coyotes since I changed scopes on it. What I really like about it is that the ballistics pretty closely mirror the .300 Win Mag. In looking at that article I'm noticing that the charge weights seem to be a little heavier than what worked best in my rifle. Oh well, each rifle barrel is a creature unto itself.

Super cartridge for mice to moose. Easy to load for, minimal recoil and extremely effective. More bangflops with it than with my heavier rounds.

I had that very same American Rifleman magazine. I decided to pitch a bunch of them when I moved into my new house though.
REDGREEN I have had the same results. I have killed deer with about every caliber between 22lr and 45-70 when I helped do crop damage control for 15 years. The 25-06 is the best killing them in their tracks caliber I have ever seen. I catch a lot of ribbing from some of the young bucks around where I hunt about using a mouse gun. But I am the one that they come looking for to help them trail up a deer that they have shot with their cannons and can't find it. Worst caliber I ever used on deer is the 7mm Remington Mag. For some unexplained reason I could place a perfect vital shot and the deer would run 100 or so yards. Where I hunt in east NC if a deer gets out of the field it runs into a jungle that surrounds the field. It is very hard to find a deer in that stuff. You almost have to step on it to find it. 99% of the time when you shoot them with the 25-06 they are laying right were they were standing.

1Shot, agree that the .25-06 is typically a lightning-like killer. Easy to shoot well too, which I think accounts for some of the success in the field. I too have been told "it's not enough rifle for the mulies here." Then I go tag another one.

Interesting observation about the 7mm Rem mag. I never had that problem, but have heard it from others often enough that I wonder if some of the 7mm Rem mag bullets were built pretty tough, perhaps for elk hunting, and they just didn't open very rapidly for quick kills on deer. Don't know, am just tossing something out for consideration. Otherwise I can't explain why that particular caliber, right between the very effective .25's & .30's, would have any trouble with deer.

I can't understand the results with the 7 mag and my hunting buddy had the same results. We even used light 139 Hornady, 140 ballistic tips that would really come apart and the deer still ran a good ways on them if the shots were inside 200 yards. I am talking about perfect shoulder shots. If the range got into the 250 yard and longer ranges it seemed to kill much better. Best bullet we found was the 154 Hornady SP interlock. I know some people that slow the 7 mag down 200 fps or so and it seems to kill better with the closer shots. I guess it is just one of those things.

A number of years ago my hunting buddy was taken on a deer hunt by his boss for a Christmas present. It was to Alabama on a farm where they grew some humongous deer. They were told to bring at least a 7mm mag. He took his custom Rem. 700, Heart barrel 25-06 loaded up with some of the old 120 Speer Grand Slams. He fired three shots and killed his limit of 2 huge bucks and a doe. I have used the 120 GS on east NC deer and it is really too tough a bullet for them. If I had the opportunity to go after huge deer it would be the bullet that I would use. I still have some stashed back and even a box of ammo loaded up JUST IN CASE. They shoot bug holes in my 25-06 at 3000 fps.
