Got the idea to do another project rifle, this time for my niece. She's shown interest in hunting, all be it through an ex dumb-a$$ boyfriend (not saying that cuz I disliked the kid, he was just a true DA), so I thought if she had her own rifle she might delve into hunting a bit more.

Always wanted a 250 Savage, just never seemed to fall in place, but now that I'm more or less retired and bored as hell, why not.

With a 22" tube, I'm thinking a 100 gr BT/AB for whitetails/Lope/range fun time. Question is, what powder to start looking at ?

Varget?

Don't know about turning the head of a young girl that is intent on dating an idiot. Oh the other hand, my wife's boyfriend didn't turn out bad--I'm still here after almost fifty years. I do know that the 250 Savage would be a Skookum cartridge. Varget would be a fine powder with the 100 grain pill. Actually, any of the medium burn powders would likely give you good service. Other powders I might consider would include RL15, H4895, IMR4895 and IMR4320. Sounds like a great project. I'll be looking at what you come up with.

Gunner I've been shooting a 250-3000 AI for some months now; initially with a 25 inch barrel that I've recently lopped to 21 inches.

It shoots 85-100g pills brilliantly with H4895, Varget and R17. 17 brings the top speeds but the others aren't shabby for speed either.

The AI version has about 5-6g more case capacity, but I'm not leaning too hard on it in any case. I'm getting a very mild 2975fps with 100g bullets which I think is doable in the standard version in a bolt gun.

If you're doing a build I'd recommend the 1-10" twist so you can shoot the 115g BT or 117g Interlock BTSP should she wish to go after bigger deer or pigs.

Gunner - you working with a Savage 99?

Gunner if you are working with a Savage 99 make sure it has the 1-10" twist or the 100 grain BT won't stabilize.

My Dad has a 99RS that was made sometime in the 20's and it will only group lightweight, flat base style bullets. It throws anything boat tailed all over the place.

The newer 99's and the Savage 110's all have the 1-10" twist which will stabilize any weight of .25 caliber bullet.

Good luck!

If you have a choice I'd do it on a Model 70 controlled round feed, of you might just look at Montana Rifle Company rifles. They sell just the action, and they make a very fine one at that. I think they would also chamber for the 250-3000 if you desire for a few dollars more and make a complete rifle!! Just a thought. Another thought might be a 257 Roberts or a 6mm Remington! Yes I had to say that for the game she would hunt.

IF you stay with a straight 250 Savage and not the Ackley, my loads look like this:
100 Gr BT over 38 Grains of IMR 4350 or the same Bullet over 35 Grains of IMR 4064. It has taken a couple of pronghorn for me, one of them at 264 yards. If you can find a short action Savage, you can sometimes buy a 250 Savage barrel from Midway for about $100. My smith would install it for $40. 1:10 twist is the way to go. Lighter weight bullets make great practice ammo for a young person. CL

I've looked at Ruger's Page and they show the American as a 22/250. I was thinking about a rebore job

I like that rifle and she's a tall, long girl, so I'm sure it will fit her just fine. Maybe top it off with a plain Jane 3x9x40. Light, not a kicker, but still odd enough to be a " You got What" rifle and still serve her well.

Maybe a Jr College graduation gift.

It's an excellent cartridge Gunner and a good choice. I'd load up the 100 BT or PTand never think twice about it.

Those actions look pretty nice. Hard to tell how tight they are without holding one in hand. Do you know if they fit model 70 inlet stocks or?

The MRC actions turn out very nice when finished and fit well in Winchester pattern stocks

Yes I believe they do fit in Model 70 pattern stocks. They use the same spacing and base mounts also. They even use the good old pre-64 trigger before someone thought they could improve on it! NOT :p
