Hi everyone, I just started reloading and was looking to get a little info. I'm trying to cook up an accurate coyote load for my 257 Bee. I'll be using 75 gr Sierra varminters and RL22 or 7828. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, I've seen COAL listed between 3.075 and 3.25 inches for this load. Would it be best to start at 3.075?

Thanks,

Wayne

Welcome to the forum!

The fellas who load for the 257 Wby will be along shortly.
Stay tuned.

Hi there and welcome...
My first inclination would be to talk you out of that bullet. You can push a 100 gr BT at 3400 fps+++, and that bullet is a great fit. I push the 110 AB with IMR 7828 (69.0) grs in 3 different 257 wbys, with great accuracy and around 3400 fps. Use 66.5 gr of 4851 and a 100 GR BT at 3500 FPS++ and again great (1/2 inch 3 shot group accuracy)

Having said that, here are some ideas;
1) WBYs have a lot of freebore, I measure the magazine and load as long as the cartridge will fit. I still get over an eighth of freebore... This is one of the more important things to check. SAMMI COAL is 3.25 max. I load 3.392 for my coal and it works very well. In fact, changing the COAL was what made this gun shoot the best.. IE the largest difference.
2) WBYs tend to like hot loads. Hence, a slower powder like 7828 often outperforms faster powders like 4350. None of my 257s shoot 4350 well, but it is listed as the most accurate powder for the 110 gr AB...
3) I use federal mag primers.
4) the 257 is tricky to load for. make sure that the scope is tight, use a chrono to help narrow the choices down.
5) Stock WBYs have a screw on the forearm/fore stock that needs to be tightened to 35 inch pounds. Check this out on the WBY site, but their guns do not have floated barrels.

Don't get discouraged... The 257 WBY is a great gun, just a little fickle for those of us that demand 1/2 inch groups.

...Sierra lists COAL for the 75gr. HP @ 3.025, relatively long bearing surface/ short ogive. I've had pretty good luck w/ both the 75gr. Sierra & V-Max, but for long range coyote I would go w/ the 85gr. NBT (BC 0.329) or new 90gr. Sierra BlitzKing (BC 0.393). The 75gr. bullets start to lose momentum quickly after 400yds., the 85/90gr. don't drop as fast, & buck the wind better. As far as COAL, I like to leave the end of the bearing surface @ the bottom of the case neck if possible, instead of trying to "stretch" it out to reach the lands...

Thanks for the feedback. Hardpan, my rifle is a 700 CDL, do you know if Remington chambers that with as much freebore as Weatherby? Hi Wayne,
Don't know about the 700 cdl and freebore, But, if you already have sub MOA, Chrono the load, and then you can try to get to a similar velocity with power selection. I generally use the 257 on deer, so 100 gr BTs work great.
best,

Hello Wayne....

Welcome to the forum

Winchester and Remington rifles chambered in Weatherby calibers are NOT free bored like WBY rifles

The 75 grain/4000 fps sure is awesome. The downside to that specific bullet is conditions have to be almost better than perfect. The wind drift with that little bullet is significant. Then again the wind is no friend of any long shot/caliber bullet combo this side of a 50 BMG

Keeep your overall short and you will be much better off at least thats how my remmy works

As for bullet choice I say load up some 100 gr ballistic tips when you actually look at trajectories you will be surprised just because you are getting 4k the 100 at 3600 is pretty tough to beat

I even scrapped the idea of 2 loads for mine and just shoot accubonds for both

Unless you are saving the pelts which I doubt you are who cares

I've worked up a load using moly'd 87 gr TNTs & IMR-4350 that I use for fireforming 7 RM brass, but I'm with the others... if I were you, I'd go w/ 100 gr NBTs.

Like others, I found that my Vangard likes bullets seated deep... the previous owner couldn't seem to get the 110 ABs to shoot, so I tried 'em seated as deeply as I would 100 gr monometals (100 gr ETips produced geniune 1-hole groups w/ RL22) and VIOLA! Groups tightened up using FC 7RM brass & IMR-7828.

My opinion is going to be affected heavily by the fact that I have a 257 AI that I varmint hunt with, but I consider my 257 Roy to be a big game rifle, and save the varmint blasting for more mild, econimical, cartridges.

On the other hand, I am rather curious as to what my first 'yote will look like when/if I nail one w/ that 87 gr TNT load :) !
