The local gun shop has a Browning a-bolt stalker in 260 rem that's been sitting on the shelf for about 2yrs now and i'm considering buying it but i have a couple questions i was hoping you guys could help me with. Most of the 260 rems i've seen or read about has a 1-9 rate of twist. The shop guy couldn't tell me what this one had so i called browning and they said the rate of twist in this particular rifle was 1-10. Will the 1-10 twist be a good rate of twist for the 120-130gr bullets which is what i would want to shoot from this gun? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You! Mike

You'll need the length of the bullet you're thinking about using. The two 6.5mm (0.264") bullets I have on hand and the recommended twist are:
140gr Lapua Naturalis (all copper roundnose): length = 1.275" twist rates: 1:8 for velocities below 2800fps and 1:10 for velocities greater than 2800 fps (which would be pushing it in a 260 Rem).
130gr Barnes TSX (all copper Spitzer so probably a bit longer than a lead core bullet of the same weight): length = 1.332" twist rates: 1:8 for velocities below 2800fps and 1:9.5 for velocities greater than 2800 fps (which would be doable in a 260 Rem w/ 130gr bullet).
Playing around with the numbers a 1:10 would be appropriate for a bullet 1.125" long (>2800fps). I don't know that the difference between 1:9.5 and 1:10 would make much of a difference....but then I don't know much

I had a 1-9 twist 260 that wouldnt stabilize 140 grain X bullets
My current 260 has a 1:8 twist and it handles everything
Id think a 1:10 twist would be best with 129 grain Interlocks and smaller

Thanks for the imput, i really appreciate it. After reading the feedback i've recieved here and from a couple other guns forums i've decided against the Browning. I like the gun but i'm a little afraid of the 1:10 twist for that caliber. I think i'm going to go with the Rem Mtn rifle 260 cal with the 1:9 twist. Again Thank You! Mike

i think the 1in10" would be great for a 120gr ballistic tip the ultimate 6.5 deer bullet
Ya know... if the guns been there for a couple of years, you might just make the guy a "low ball" offer and give it a try. If it doesn't shoot the slugs you want, take the money you saved with the "low ball" offer and put a custom barrel on it! Just a thought.
BTW, Nosler makes a 100g Partition that would stablize easily in the 1 in 10 and it really does the job on WT Deer.
