I have two remington 700's. Both in 270 win. One stainless one CMV. Li decided late last year to convert one of the 270's to a barrel that would allow me to shoot the Berger 170 GR EOL Elite Hunter. Orderd a 26" Remage McGowen Precision with 1 x 8 twist. I used the CMV 270 as the doner. Getting the barrel off was a bitch but after cutting the barrel off at the nut and then heating it it finally let loose. Any hoot I plan on using reloader 26 for this load. Checked the lands and in started .0020 back overall catridge 3.496. Loaded 54.4 ladder up to the 56.9. Just loading here to find max. Velocity ranged from 2605 to the high of 2,887. No pressure signs so I loaded a short .2 gr ladder 56.9 to 57.5 as I know I am close. Winchester brass, winchester large rifle primers. I am expecting that I will get a max of 57.1 or 57.3 as I am loading long. So either 2,930 or 2,975 fps. At sea level 2,930 equates to 3,245 fp of energy at muzzel, 1,124 fp at 1,000 yds and supersonic out just past 1,700 yds. That at sea level. At 5,000 ft elev it is supersonic to beyond 2,000 yds. Once I determine max I will update you on max load and velocity once I reach it. And then accuracy loads. WOW from a 270 win none the less.

It sounds like a wicked combo. I think that sucker will carry the mail too.

Can’t wait to hear how it shoots. 26 is an awesome powder in the 270 Win.

There is plenty of mass and with your anticipated velocities, it will work very well, indeed. Excellent results.

Believe or not I am moving after 18 years at my present house. Close on new house the 19th of March so it's pack and get rid of all my junk before the move. Perhaps I will get a day to go to the range and shoot my next loads. We will see but I will follow up when I get the time.

I want to range last week. with the new 26" 1 * 8 twist barrel. I loaded 170 gr Berger in Winchester brass, WLRP, COL 3.484 Approximately .0030 off the lands. Shot my ladder using RL 26. TEMP was 48 deg F, 100% humidity, from 54.4gr to 56.9 grains .5 gr jumps. For some reason first two rounds did not register. I adjusted magneto and voila. First measured round 55.4 gr vel 2,764 , 55.9 gr 2,809 fps, 56.6 gr 2864 fps, 56.9 gr 2,887. No pressure signs. My guess is that since I was loading long Berger Load data was probably SAMI COL of 3.25. Which explain the velocity as pressure would decrease with additional volume. So I got back home and loaded another ladder 56.9 through 58.1 .2 gr jumps. My guess is max will end up near 57.9 If I am right, it's looking like around 2960 to 2970 fps will be my load I will use. 2,970 fps will give me 3,330 fp energy at muzzle. And a velocity of 1,754 fps and 1,161 fp energy at 1,000 yds at sea level. Bullet remains supersonic showing 1,128 fps at 1,700 yds. At a 300 yd zero 20.39 MOA vertical adjustment at 1,000 yds. Round still show 2,017 fp energy at 500 yds. Wow. I am also loading some Nosler 150 gr ABLR loading these long as well I am hoping for 3,120 out these. Giver that the ballistic will be very close a little flatter thoughwith 18.83 moa drop at 1,000 yds. Both supersonic to 1,700 yds

That’s some Great speed. A 170 at 2900 should really make the 280 guys sit up and take notice!

Thanks for posting your results, that's a serious long range load. I'm going to try the 170 gr Berger again but with Magnum and IMR 7828 ssc this time to see how they work, going to have to try RL 26 some day too. Previously I tried IMR 7977 which works well with other bullets in this gun but they only shot around 1.5" for the best combination. Speed was good at over 2800 fps, your 26" barrel should be able to get over 2900 fps easily with that powder. I'm loading them out to mag length (3.350" I believe) Others have seen it but the gun is a Sako 85, Benchmark 1 in 9 twist, 23" long.

Gerry I belive the Berger site calls out a 1 x 8 twist. 1 x 9may work though depending on on your elevation though. Berger has a twist calculator. A 1 x may stabilize but you BC will drop

Also the magazine on the Magpul 700 hunter is about 3.6 so I can load then as along as I want. Even into thee rifling. Once I get velocity load down I'll start d creeping back and forth for accuracy. We shall see soon enough

The Berger should be stable even here at 400 ft above sea level according to jbm ballistics. I did buy them knowing full well that Berger says 1 in 8 so if it doesn't work it's not their fault at all. If I were to do it again I would have gone with a 1 in 8 but I'm happy with the gun as is. I'll watch for your work with the 150 gr ABLR. Have you tried the Matrix 165 gr? They are still available and say they will work in a 1 in 9 on the website.

Yes the 170 will stabilize but not I optimum so slight wobble will cause a decrease in the BC. If you were over 2,500 ft you would be good for sure. I have tried 165 matrix. These should stabilized in the 1 x 9 twist. I'll let you know how 150 ABLR do in my next round of testing would be nice to get 3,100 plus

I'll definitely be watching for your results. I like how you set up your rifle, nicely thought out.

Bringing up an older thread here but I gave the 170 gr Berger another try this time with H 4831 sc and it shot much better than other powders tried earlier. I loaded up a bunch more and now the plan is to turn one loose on a bear in the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned..........

In the past I had tried Magnum, IMR 7977 and IMR 7828 ssc at magazine length and also seated way out near the lands with no success. Tried one more time today with the H 4831 sc at magazine length and it shot well and should be going 2700-2750 fps. Other powders can give a bit more speed but in this case if there is no accuracy then what is the point?

Those of you with RL 26 (which I don't have) Berger shows the top speed listed at 2899 fps! That's pretty potent from the good old 270 Win.

Yes I did run some 170 Berger’s in my 26” McGowen barrel. last time I ran 3.484 coal with 53.5 gr. RL 26 about 2940 at70 degrees. Unfortunately I am down to one pond of the pixie dust and it is no where to be found

That's some really impressive speed. I have heard that RL 26 has been hard to find recently, looks like it has been one of the best powders not only in the 270 Win but a lot of other rounds.

Yes RL 26 is a great powder. I use in my 260 Rem heavies, 284 Win heavies, and 338 win Mag heavies. Unfortunately you can not did it anywhere which leads me to believe Alliant is having problems with the vendor for this powder.
