270 WIN & H1000

My current load uses 4831sc. I haven't been able to tune the accuracy quite where I'd like it, and was looking to try something else.

55gn of IMR4831 with a 130gn Sierra boat tail has been accurate, as well as 57gn of Win Supreme 780 in the flat-bottom 130gn Hornady and 53gn of H-414 with the 130gn Nosler BT. There are lots of bullets and powders that will do well with the 270 Win. Keep us posted.

Highcotton, do you know this rifle well? Do you have any idea what its accuracy potential is when using other bullets?

Highcotton, I have been shooting the 270win for over 40years :)
I have a MOA of around .5 using 130gr ABs over top of IMR 4350.
Not sure if you want to try but it is like a lightning strike when you hit something:)
Just another thought

Blessings,
Dan

Take a look a RL 22, it is a top performer in the 270 Win.

Looking to build a load for 140 grain AB's over H1000. Any suggestions
?

With out a loading manual handy, I can't even imagine using H-1000 in a 270. The Hodgons online data center lists as a maximum load of 63 grains with the 140. That would be a compressed load I believe. Lots of other powders more appropriate.

Dan and I use the same IMR 4350 load with 130 grain bullets in the .270 Win. I agree with Bill, H1000 is awfully slow for the 130 or 140 bullet in the .270 Win. My load with Partitions kills deer, DRT!

I have seen a few fellers on here with REALLY good results with the 140 and RL22 along with the 130's and 150's. If you had some, it might be worth a shot.

Try and get some RL22 if the 4831 isn't working out. Don't know if your using the IMR or H version of 4831 but I also had very good results with H4831.

57.5 g of RL22 or H4831 w/150 sierra gameking was 1/2 MOA or better performer at 2900fps from a bone stock rem 700 bdl w/22" bbl.

58.5g H4831 w/140g AB did 3/4 MOA at 3000fps from same rifle as above.

Cotton, if your rifle doesn't like 4831, go the other direction and try 4350.

Also, if you are not already using them, try CCI 200 primers under the H4831. It likes a cold primer, so ditch the magnum primers with H4831 in the .270win.

Actually my .270 Model 70 likes WLR or CCI BR2 primers which are a little more brissiant than CCI 200's with IMR4350.

The load I was shooting was 59 grains of H 4831sc under a 140 grain NAB. I am using CCI 200 primers, WIN brass. I was shooting 130 grain NBT over 57.5 grains of H 4831sc, same brass and primers. The NBT load was consistently .5 inches, less if I was having a good day. I had a couple of situations with the BT's I didn't like in the field, thus the switch to AB's. The current load with the AB's is averaging .75 inches, which is absolutely tolerable, but sometimes a man can't resist trying to milk a little more

If I get ahold of some 140 AB I'll give h-1000 a try, r-25, I already know imr 7828 loves the 130 bt. I'll share when it happens.

I know this post is somewhat old but im gonna throw in my 2 cents. I dont have alot of money to be throwing around trying powder and bullets so this is what I did. My dad had some 4831 on hand. My gun always shot Remington corelokt 130 grain factory ammo the best. That said, I bought 100 Bullets from midway Usa, loaded 3 round lots, with said corelokt bullets, starting at max and backing off half a grain till i got to the min published load per Hodgdons data. I couldnt get a group under 1.5 inches at 100 yds. I tried some Win 760 a buddy of mine gave me because he was getting out of reloading. Same results.

On a whim, I picked up some Hornady 140 grain interlocks at the local gunshop. Dad also had a lb of H1000 he hadnt opened that he had bought for his 300 Win Mag. My conclusion was that 63 grain compressed load is a pain to mess with and get the bullet seated. I did the same test half a grain at a time with the H1000 and decided 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards with 62.5 grains of H 1000 was gonna be as good as it got. I am happy. Just so you know I got 3-4 inch groups and on 1.5 inch group, with those Hornady bullets with 4831. I haven tried the 760 but i suspect the results will be the same.

All that said, that is the load that works for me with MY 270. Could there be better powders for that caliber with similar results? Probably, but i havent tried them and see no reason to tinker since i have a load that works perfectly for me. I hope this has helped answer your initial question.

I've got 58gr h-1000 loaded in my wife's 270 win with 150gr hornady soft points. Haven't shot them through a chrono but im getting groups around .75" consistently
