270 WSM MV

Trevor, I haven't messed with the 130's a bunch in the 270WSM, but the first load I tried with the Hornady 130gr Interbonds with Magpro, WW cases, and CCI250's go right around 3375 or so. It is one flat shooting load and man, it is the very first load I developed for the 270WSM. It is also very accurate too. I have some targets stashed away that go under an 1" at 200. That was before I really started to learn to tweak my loads as well. After seeing those speeds, I decided the case was better used to propel bigger, heavier bullets around 3000-3100. I jumped right to 150gr'ers and have a load with the BT and PT running right around 3130 or so.

I always told myself, I had 0 need for my 264WM, as everything the 264 can do, the 270WSM can do better. I am still kinda right, but I like the 264 still

Why do you ask? Scotty

Scotty my man, that Winchester is such a nice rifle though! You do need a 264 WM my friend!

Oh, I am with you. Both of them are here to stay. Both of them shoot too well to ever part with. 140's in the 264WM seem pretty deadly as well. Hoping to get a chance to smoke a deer with it this year. Scotty

Thanks guys.

I was just curious as to what it is capable of. I ran a few rounds of .270 over the chronograph today. They averaged 3203 fps. It's the same load I worked up a couple months ago, but out of a new can of RL22. I guess this batch of powder has a somewhat slower burn rate or something, because my velocity is up a little over 50 fps and the ambient temperature is down.

I know the WSM holds about 10% more powder and was wondering what kind of velocity one can get out of one. I would have guessed mid 33's and it looks like you made it a little past that, Scotty. I imagine that the WSM pulls away from the .270 Win. a bit more with the heavier bullets.

Trevor, I can get more velocity from the E-Tip, but the accuracy for my rifle is superior at this velocity. I don't need more. I can testify that this velocity is sufficient to take down moose and elk.

I'm sure it does. I'm not quite the speed-a-holic that Scotty is, I just happened to find that my best accuracy is at the top end of the load data with this rifle. I'm not upset to see good velocity, but I would have been just fine with it if the best accuracy had been at anything over 3000 fps.

I really don't know what maximums others can get, I know that with Barnes 130 grain TSX and MagPro, I get 3315 fps and sub-MOA. With 130 grain AB and R905, I get 3304 and MOA. With 130 grain GMX, I obtain roughly the same velocities I get with the 130 grain E-Tip. However, with a 130 grain Swift Scirocco and RL19, I get 3424 fps and sub-MOA. I suppose I could use this load, but again, the E-Tip is working very well for me and these bullets are somewhat easier for me to find here in northern BC.

Man, that Scirocco load is a screamer Mike...

I have kinda backed away from the 130's a bit in the 270WSM, just for the reasons stated, if I can make little bullets really sing, the bigger ones do just about as well, a few FPS slower..

Trevor, your 270 is really shooting buddy. Nothing wrong at ALL with that load. Talk about getting a great shooting rifle. Anybody would be jealous of that performance out of a 270 Win. I can't imagine doing too much better to be honest. That would quell any reason for me to ever want a WSM! Scotty

I just noticed this was 200 yards... Yeah, you are done! Chalk another up for RL22! Scotty

real nice Trevor . if the gun shoots close to that all the time I'd be tickled pink . jim

Jim,

It (more probably I) won't shoot quite like that every time, but it gets pretty close. I have to keep the barrel clean though. Accuracy really starts to slip after about 25 to 30 rounds.
