280 Ack 22" barrel

I have an opportunity to purchase a Savage 110 in 280 Ackley. I know the rifle, it belongs to a friend ,and it easily to shoots under 1" with Hornady Precision Hunter ammo. But, it has a 22" barrel, and everything I read says 280 Ackley really needs 24+ to shine. How much does a 22" barrel handicap the cartridge?

No handicap.
You will lose around 30 fps per inch, so around 60 fps.
The animal will never know the difference.
What bullet weight do you want to use?
I have a 17" 280AI myself

If I get it, I would really like to use the 160 AccuBond, but seems they are hard to find. I have stashes of 145 Barnes LRX and 162 ELD-X bullets.

Howie,
The 280AI is a fantastic round. It will handle anything in NA. It's fast, accurate, flat shooting and hits hard! You won't be disappointed with a 22" barrel.
RL22, IMR/H4831, IMR7828SSC are the powders to look at. What bullet are you looking at?

If I get it, I would really like to use the 160 AccuBond, but seems they are hard to find. I have stashes of 145 Barnes LRX and 162 ELD-X bullets.

Don't overlook the 160 gr BT. Shot this doe last year late season with my 280 AI 160 gr BT, DRT!

Yep, I’ve got in Stock alerts set for those, as well. I also have around 400 150 Gr “bonded polymer tipped blems” I got from Midway a few years ago that I’m 99% sure are Hornady interbonds. And about as many 162 gr blems that I’m certain are SST’s

I've gotten 3200 fps with the 140's, 3100 fps with the 150's and 3000 fps with the 160's from my 24" custom 280AI. Pretty much 7mm Rem Mag performance.

The 140 AccuBond Nosler ammo blew me away in terms of speed, I wasn’t expecting that.
The Nosler 160 grain AccuBond ammunition seem to be more in line with what I expected, and may be a tad slower than I expected.
With the 160 grain AccuBond factory ammunition, my impact velocity is right at 1800 ft./s at 650 yards.
I have considered this a 600 yard elk rig, And even with the factory ammo, it will do that.
