If someone has some free time, and would be so kind, could you please run some numbers for me?

SAAMI 280 Ack Imp
24" barrel
O.A.L. 3.420"
Nosler brass, 66.806 grain H2O
Reloader 26
Barns 168 grain LRX

These bullets are just HUGE, and I'm a bit skeptical about using them.

Thanks for your time!

It's a 1:8 twist. I should be able to stabilize it, I'm just not sure it will leave enough room in the case to push it very hard.

That is a pretty long bullet. What are you hunting that you need 168 gr?
Maybe a 150 gr monolithic like the 150 gr E-Tip would work.
They shoot pretty good in my 280AI.

That is an awesome group! Truth is there is nothing I am going to be hunting that couldn't be taken with a 150 grn etip. Cow elk this year, which wouldn't be a problem.

I'm more experimenting at this point with some higher BC mono bullets. It may turn out that I have to give up too much velocity to make up for a slightly higher BC. But who knows without at least trying.

I too really like the 168 gr weight but I wasn't able to get the speed that I was hoping for.
The 7mm 168 gr ABLR has good BC but the 150 gr ABLR at 3100 fps will out perform it down range.

I hunt with the 168 ABLR in my 280AI at 2950 fps, So far it has been a killing bullet on 2 Elk...I would like to try some of those 150 etips they look like a good bullet !

I am still waiting to see what my 150gr. ABLRs will do in my 280AI once they hit a animal. On paper they are right around .5moa (y) and if I remember right they are traveling right around 3100fps.
I am using Nosler brass, RL-22 & M-210 primers.

Blessings,
Dan

The next trip to the farm for crop damage deer hunting, I'm going to take the 280AI loaded up with the 150 gr ABLR.

What is your load? Accuracy?

JD I'm running that bullet with Ramshot Magnum 66grains With a Fed 210M in nosler brass at 3.395 OAL..pretty much prints .5 MOA if I do my part..The 150 ABLR actually shoots better in my gun but I would rather hunt with the 168 for a little extra weight !

Thanks buddy.
I'll have to give Ramshot Magnum a try. I couldn't get the 168 gr ABLR to shoot until I tried IMR7828SSC. Really happy with the accuracy but the speed is slower than I want. 2950 fps is where it needs to be.

JD, I have tested that load in temps from 70 degrees down to below 0 and from sea level to 9500 ft and it has remained very consistent ! I did find the 168 ABLR to be more finicky in my gun especially with seating depth and powders...I had given up on it a few times ..one thing I don't like about it is when seating on a compressed charge it is easy to put a ring on the tip of the bullet where the seater stem engages it ! Reminds me of an Amax in that respect..

Thanks guys. I appreciate all the information about Nosler offerings. I use Nos bullets in many of my rifles. This particular one however, I want to try and come up a load for the 168 LRX. Barns did provide me some data directly via email, but nothing for RL26. They did have some for IMR7828ssc that maxed out at 58 grains.

Anyway, I took a stab at it. I loaded 3 at 57 grn RL26, and 3 and 58. Not compressed with an OAL of 3.420" (important to not be compressed with Redding Comp Seating dies). My max load with 168 Berger VLD is 61.5 RL26, but that would have much less bearing surface, and I think I'd be over pressure at that charge with the LRX.

Anyway, thanks again!

I got Berger 168's to 2,940 fps using RL26, good accuracy too...I imagine it would work for the 168 Nosler too.

57 grains rl26 with the 168 grain Barns LRX gave me 2770 fps at a bit over 1 moa. Definitely nothing to write home about, but it's just a data point.

58 grains gave me 2820 fps, but the group really opened up. But no pressure signs.

I also ran some 168 grain Berger VLD hunting over 60.0 grains rl 26. I was at 2920 fps but it was 92 degrees out. I'm still having issues with fliers. I'm starting to lose faith in rl 26. Good speed, but I'm not seeing the accuracy I'd like. I do have some rl22, imr7828ssc, h4831sc.

I'd really look at adjusting your seating depth on your 60 grain load. Looks like it could be tuned up some.

Great speed though.
