I shot a few 140 gr BT's through the 280 AI this afternoon.
63.0 grs RL 22 in a R-P case and a Federal GM215M primer, COL 3.400"
yielded an average velocity of 3184 fps, ES 19 SD 9. Group went .210"

The 140 gr AB with 60.0 grs IMR 4831 yielded an average velocity of 3142 fps, ES 16 SD 20. Groups went .534" and .675".

Jim,

That is a bragging size group. The world is flat and all is at peace after that sort of group.

Mike,

I just need the 140 gr AB to shoot like that and life will be good!

DAMN IT JIM! I had the 280 AI bug before, now I think I have an infestation! Just a few more baby bills to pay off and I'm geting my barrel ordered. I screwed up and ordered all the small stuff first instead of the barrel. If I would have ordered the barrel first I could of spread out the small stuff. Oh well I'll know beter next time.

Well done Jim that thing sure does shoot great!

I have no doubt that the 140 AB will perform well. You have the expertise to make it sing in that rifle.

Now only IF you knew somebody that lived in antelope land for a hunt!

Hmmmmmmm, poor Jim!

That's not hardly fair that you're getting about 70 more fps out of it than my 7 mag. What velocity are you pushing a 160 grainer at? I'm only getting 2911 but it shoots real tight groups w/ 63.0 rl-22.

Yote,

I'm getting 3019 fps with the 160 gr AB.

Yote,I'm going to load some 160 gr. Sierra later on and my book says that I can get 3000 FPS with IMR 4350 powder for my 7 Mag. Right now I'm loading 175 gr, Speer Mag Tips with IMR 4831 powder and 2827 FPS.

7Mags Forever and a 30 cal. will "Slam Dunk Um"

Spire, my m70 groups excellent with the 140 bt using 63.5 grains IMR4350 but I'm convinced the 160 grainer is where it's at for all big game from deer-elk. The partitions shoot better than the AccuBond in my rifle, at least to this point. If you don't get the accuracy you're looking for, give RL-22 a try with the 160. I may try bumping up my charge to get the velocity out of it. The Nosler manual says 63.0 is max but many on here are getting there best performance and speed up to 66 grains of powder. I'm happy with the accuracy but it is possible I could get the speed to go along with it if I bump it up a bit. If not, I'm definitely content with the accuracy I've got now. Furthest kill to date has been 286 yards and it lambasted mulie sideways. With the recoil, all I could see was white belly hair in the scope when it tipped over. I'm getting 5 1/4 inch 3 shot groups at 400 yards, easily a heart shot on a deer at that range. At 100 it looks like 1 ragged hole with 5 shots. Not too shabby for a Partition "hunting" bullet.

Great shooting Jim!!

The 140 bt at that velocity has to be as perfect a deer and antelpe round as could be imagined. And what a group. It definately needs a hunt on the wyoming prarie.

Wow, great shooting Jim. I am another that you are pushing more out of your AI than I am from my 7mm Rem Mag with 160's. That is a great shooting rifle without a doubt. I really need to work with my 7 mag more, you are making us look bad. Thats too bad about not knowing anybody that lives in antelope land? Seems like that would be a fun hunt with an accurate far reaching rifle like that! Scotty

Jim,

Excellent shooting. What a confidence builder. I'll stick with BT for deer if I were you. It's deadly accurate and it kills like lightning. Now that my gunsmith has an Ackley reamer, I can have my Mauser converted to the Ackley too.

Man! 3100+ for the 140. That's 7 Mag performance right there. Time to rekindle the 7MM flame again.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks fellas,

I appreciate the comments.
This load would be set to go for speed goats! Drop chart would look like this.
