.280 & IMR 7828

Has anyone used or have sugestions on using IMR7828sc with the 140gr Accubonds out of the .280 ?

My go to powder is always N-165, but since I've been loading for my .257Bee as well, I like the 7828.
Burn rate looks pretty much identical between the two powders as far as I can see. If I could find a
combo with the 7828 it would be a significant cost savings.

Speer manual has 56gr to 58gr/IMR-7828 with their 145gr bullet. Most loading data I've seen using IMR-7828(ssc) has been with 150gr bullets to 175gr. Hodgdon has a load for a 120gr bullet 60.2gr to 64gr/IMR-7828ssc and they have loads for the 280AI with 140gr bullets.

Might ask someone with QL.

Why IMR7828? It would give a somewhat more sustained pressure curve, and consequently generate marginally higher velocities. This powder will certainly fill the case.

I have had excellent success with RL19 and with H4831 and 140 grain AB. Velocities are good and accuracy is outstanding with these powders. With 140 grain BT, N165 and H1000 have served me well. With the 140 grain PT, H100V is quickly becoming my "go to" powder. However, I may return to take a look at the combination of IMR7828 and 140 grain ABs.

I'm only thinking expense wise as I'm a huge Viht fan. I'm going to give the 7828 a whirl out of my .300RUM - Just thinking if I can get it to shoot, then I'll have @ minimum three calibers & will start purchasing it in 8lb containers.
My .280 is a Rem 700 Mtn Rifle with the shorter 22in tube syn stock - velocity has never been great, but it a good carry rifle.

The Mountain Rifle is surely a handsome gun. I'll be most interested in hearing how your work with IMR7828 goes. As I said, I may give it a look this winter.

Powerstroke I had a .280 in a Remington Moutain Rifle as well. I used 54.0 grs of IMR4350 with a 140 gr. Partition or AccuBond for 2940 fps. It shot consistant three shot groups at 100 yards of 3/4 of an inch. I played a little with H4831SC and worked up my load with Federal Magnum primers in the H4831SC. It had excellent potential and grouped about the same and the velocity was just a smidge faster. I used Federal Large Rifle primers with the IMR4350.

If your going to use it in several different guns go for it. Even if your 280 doesn't like 7828 your RUM might. I try to get powder that will work for several of my guns that way if it doesn't work in one it might work in another one. If nothing else it always makes good trading stock at the range if it doesn't work out.

Sure looks like it would work good in your 280.

Sportsmans north of me had some N165 - took their last pound.

POP - I have some N560 still - It's the .260 go fast powder :lol: Sportsmans in Thornton - I-25 & 84th had four of five pounds last night.

I started trying to really organize all my notes etc and purchased numerous 3-ring binders for each caliber. Forgot that the .270wsm really "REALLY" liked the N-165. Maybe I need to go the other direction and see if I can get it to shoot in the .257Bee :?

I used 7828 for my dad's 280 rem in both 150 and 160 grain partitions with super results. He turned 85 this summer and goes through ammo pretty slow. I have not reloaded for his 280 since the Nosler reloading guide number 4. I had to do a tripple take when I looked at the #6 book and compaired it to what I was loading for my dad. I was at 58 grains of 7828 for the 160 partitions .5 grains below max in #4 and 3.5 grains over max in # 6. I never saw any pressure signs and that load is death on mule deer. His rifle is a Ruger M77.

i use the nosler partitions my self in all my rifles , my .280 just happens to be a mtn rifle an older one with a remington black sythetic stock, i use 140 grain in it , in my 7mm rem mag i use 150 gr partitions , in my 300rem ultramag i use 180 grain partitions also inmy old model 721 30-06 i use 180 grain partitions, i use 7828 and 4350 powders primarily

I'm with Dr.Mike here.
H4831SC,RL19 and IMR 4350 work very well in my 7MM Express with 140ABs,140 Sierras and 139 Hornady BTSPs.
All three produce 3000 fps or a tad more with the various bullets.
Rifle is a standard weight 700 with a 22 inch tube.

I would think IMR7828 would be better suited to a 160-175 grain bullet.

Try it and let us know.

My .280 is the same older Mtn rifle - sure is nice to pack around.

I'll have to look at the load again, but I did try the IMR 7828ssc w/ 140gr AB's
If I recall correctly ( which I probably don't ) I started with a mid-load point.
2.5 inch group and serious flattened primers. The idea of trying to use one powder
for several rifles has now gone out the window - found a great load with RL-25 for the
.257 Bee that I was using the 7828 in :roll:

I have some old IMR 4831 that showed a little promise - more to come.

I know this is about 7828, but see other powders now being talked about. I wouldn't discount RL 17. I'm using it with 140's in my 7mm-06, and getting right at 2996 fps avg. This with a 22" barrel.
