I took my Rem 700 SS in .280 out today to try to start working up some loads with the 140gr A-bond. I've always shot 150gr B-tips, but would like a couple hundred more feet per second out of it if possible. My previous loads have been great in my opinion with 57.0gr of N-165 clocking right at 2823fps - right at 100fps slower than book.
I managed to get 3005 fps with the 140gr A-bond and RL-17. I'm having scope issues as the x-hairs will not move right to left ( Alaskan Guide 4.5 x 14 model )
Group size measured 1.25in C/C - not what I'm looking for, but at the moment, I'll potentially blame the scope ??

I did go back to my normal load - still without being able to adjust to the left - turned 16 clicks between these three shots that cloverleafed as this load generally does....
I'm hearing Leupy calling.........

Another 280 shooter. Welcome to the club Mark. Push that 140 up a notch and you'll have a reliable deer killer there. Good Job.

Powerstroke,

Leupold VX3 4.5-14x40mm is about perfect for your 280 Rem.

It is difficult to imagine that I'll ever be without a .280 in my safe. I've pretty well stuck with 140s throughout the years, and had great success with the cartridge.

I didn't have to try very many powders in my .280 before I found a couple that work very well, so I have not loaded as many different kinds of powders as some of these folks. That being said, I have had great success with IMR4350 and H4831SC. These two powders worked great with 140 gr. Partitions in my .280 Remington Mountain Rifle.

It looks like you have a great rifle, and that is one of my favorite cartridges. It works for everything you shoot it at! It is that good. I have to agree with JD338 too in his selection of scopes. The Leupold 4.5x14x40mm is perfect for it!! Good luck with your loads. :)

I own my 280 for almost 20 years now. I never change it's diet of IMR-4831 for either 140 or 150 grains Nosler Ballistic Tip. I read it from an article by Layne Simpson in Shooting Times Magazine. That's when I decided what chambering I'm going to have for my first bolt gun and I used Layne's recommendation on what powder to use.

I just got a .280 and haven't shot it yet....she is in the gun cabinet scopeless. :(

I was leaning heavily to the Zeiss 3-9x40 but I see a lot of folks suggesting the 4-12 or 4-14 range for the .280. If 90% of your shots are in the SE US, do I really need a scope with that range over a 3-9?

Powerstroke - I have bought some 140 gr AB's that I hope to get to shoot. I may have to start with the RL17 and see what happens.

Powerstroke,

You might also want to consider the B&C reticle. It will get you out to 450-500 yds.

This another caliber that really is under estimated.
With 140 ABs I think it is a great one rifle in the safe type rifle.

You might want to try some RL19 works like a charm in my wifes 280 with 140 pts.

Thanks Guys.....
I'll have to take care of ths scope issue first. I can't bash the Cabela's scope too bad once I got the looking back on what it's been through. First mounted on the .280 which has a brutal muzzel brake on it... then ( I still don't know how I did this, but rolled my ATV over the top of myself and .280 sticking up along the side in the gun case ) Luckily it didn't put a scratch on the gun, but took the top of the case right off... gun still shot in the same place. The scope then moved to my .300RUM for a couple of years and not back to the .280.

The B&C reticle I'm looking at really hard. I have a VX-II 6X18 wiht the LRV reticle in it, that I like, but it's not good in low light situations. ( easier to blame the scope than my eyes ) It will definately wear a Leupy

I've tried some RL-19 and didn't have good results... may need to revisit that again.....
I'll have to do some digging and research to see if the N-560 powder is acceptable with the 140 AB's as so far everything I've used the N-560 has given exceptional velocity results.

Thanks again

Powerstroke,

If you want a smaller scope, the VX3 2.5x8 is an excellent choice. Great for low light too. On 8x, I have no problem holding on a 6" black bulls eye. With the B&C reticle, you would be set to go.

Powerstroke,

re: N560

The powder works great in my .280 AI. Quarter inch groups at 100 yards with AB at 3150 FPS, but right now N560 is harder to find than an honest politician.

I have had very good success with RL19 and 140 grain ABs. Recently, I have had excellent results with the 140 grain PT and H100V. Prior to this, all my loads used either WMR or WXR. However, since this is no longer manufactured, I'm using the last of these powders while searching for newer powders that will work well. The H100V, in particular, is giving me superior groups and velocities.

DrMike

What kind of velocity and accuracy are you getting with H100V?

JD338

Jim,

Sub-MOA (1/2 to 3/4) and 2925 fps from a 22 inch barrel. I have tested this load several times now. It is very consistent. I suspect that it will become my "go to" load in the future. I get slightly better accuracy with RL19 and ABs, but velocity is almost 200 fps slower. WXR falls between the two.

call Cabelas and tell them you're having problems and wish to upgrade to a Leo......... I had that same scope and sent it back. They credited me the original amount that i paid for it, which was more than the current price.

I will second the 2.5x8 VX3 with the B&C reticle. I have that exact scope on my 338 Win Mag and it is a fantastic scope. Haven't shot it past 300 yet, but man, it is a very clear scope and the B&C system is one of the best for us hunters that shoot to about 500 yards. I like mine alot and wished I could upgrade all of my Leupolds with it. I won't buy another Leupold without it. It is so easy to use and seems to work well with a large variety of cartridges.

Don't have a 280, but my cousin has a Model 700 MTN with a Leupold 2x7 compact on it and man, it is a shooter. I loaded 140gr Partitions for him with RL19 a long time ago, and man, it shot under an inch easily and he has taken a slew of deer with it. I loaded 75 for him about 10 years ago, and he still has a bunch of them I guess. We zeroed it 3" high at 100 and man, it is like a laser for him. He is a decent shot, but that load and rifle make him look good. It was before I had a chronograph, so I am not sure of the speed of the bullet, and lost my data book with the load, but it was out of an older Nosler Book I think. I always try to talk him out of it, but it is part of his family now I think. Scotty
